The DAT-quality audio of the PMW-EX1 makes possible the reduction in equipment haul and setup time, and post editing complexity, allowing us to produce concert videos like this for surprisingly reasonable prices.

Many internationally-acclaimed performers appear at the Ridgefield Playhouse. Uneven in nature, it presented a challenge to keying, but nevertheless a possibility. I experimented with that and managed to pull a key, thanks to the EX1's clean video signal.

The key was pulled in Adobe AfterEffects using the KeyLight plugin. I set the key color to fuscia, but the despill colors had to be experimented with in order to get a decent key.

The band video was layerd in a 3D AE project. Their logo, which I captured from an earlier concert video (HD is wonderful) was overlayed on a wood background in PhotoShop, using some mathematical operators to achieve a look of xylopyrography, as if the logo were burned with a hot branding iron. That was used for the DVD cover. I took that image and used it for the backdrop. Note how the color keyed video casts realistic shadows on the background, giving it a convincing effect.

Great New England Air Show Highlights 9/7/2008

This is an excerpt from the Great New England Air Show, featuring a

cross-section of the major events that happened.

Great New England Air Show: SHOCKWAVE CRASH DETAIL 9/7/2008

This is an excerpt from the main crash video, with portions of the crash magnified for forensic purposes.

Great New England Air Show: SHOCKWAVE DISASTER 9/7/2008

From the Westover Air Force Base in Chicopee, MA, comes this video shot with two XDCam EX. A curious mix of cattle shows, tractor pulls and southern rock.
While backstage, I asked lead singer Danny Pepe if they practice frequently. Nope. Not at all. I decided this was a perfect opportunity to do some stop-motion animation tests.
This 4-second clip is just a test. It took a couple of minutes to make it. No attempt was made to keep the scene "clean" so you'll see a lot of shadows moving around (this was done on our livingroom coffee table).
It was both an educational demonstration for my daughter to see how Gumby TV shows get animated, and for me to see how well the EX1 makes stop motion animation.
I used the RM-F300 remote to control the camera. I set the EX1 to Frame Record mode with a setting of "1" frame. The hard part is remembering the positions of individual legs on the character models. Especially Pokey, who has four legs. In this short, I have Gumby take a few steps, bow and wave. It's all rather quick, because I was anxious to see how the results turned out, as was my wife and daughter.
21 years ago, I did stop-motion animation with a VTR and it was cumbersome, due to the shuttling of the tape and the pre-rolls it had to do to get up to speed to drop into record mode. And even so, the results were glitchy with tracking errors. Today, with the EX1, it's easy as pie. Instead of an entire afternoon spent to create a few seconds of animation, it only took me a few minutes.
If Art Clokey (the creator of Gumby) had an XDCam, he could have created thousands of TV episodes over his career. Then we take a peek at what all that amplifier power is connected to, and then we shift to a musical topic, with a look at the music production equipment from Kurzweil, Yamaha and Roland. Then we move over to the work area, with general-purpose workstation and my new quad-core HD editing workstation. (Please pardon the mess!)
Finally, we get a peek at the MotU 896, multi-channel digital audio interface that I use to record concerts, and back once more for another look at the MIDI gear..
For those that may be curious, yes, the sound system has a dedicated 125-amp 240vac power line to the racks (each of the big QSC amps can pull up to 92A of current off the mains!). 8AWG wire feeds the woofers and subwoofers. One DCX2496 feeds the main speakers, the other is feeding the surround and (coming soon) center channel speaker(s).
The most notable hardware here is the new Bassmaxx ZR18 subwoofer, which was designed to take the place of four double 18" woofer cabinets. It achieves this with an absurdly large piston displacement linear stroke capability.
Enjoy the tour!

For more details, visit www.basspig.com

A Machinima / Live-Action/CG Movie Intro

This was a joint project between a friend of mine, who is discovering the XBox 360 and enjoys the game called Halo 3, and myself.
He captured game footage, which we played back on our big screen in-studio. I'm experimenting with a picture profile that warms up the colors in certain green and red tones. It had the almost magical effect of adding vibrancy to an otherwise dull scene. This film is an exercise in using depth of field as a creative artistic tool. The PMW-EX1 makes this a realistic process, where I only had to use an ND filter and a 90º shutter to reduce the lighting enough to allow for an f1.9 aperture, which makes shallow DoF possible. Enjoy the film.

New Milford in Winter as captured by Sony XDCam EX

New Milford in Winter as captured by Sony XDCam EXThis is my first footage shot at night with the Sony XDCam EX (PMW-EX1), Sony's new 1/2", 3 CMOS wondercam.
The film opens with a timelapse sunset, followed by dusk scenes of the mountains and the moon. Enviromentalists claim that a rise in earth temperatures causes melting of polar ice caps and that as this ice melts, it supposedly causes a rise of ocean levels which is supposed to submerge small island nations, thus making the big oil companies liable for billions of dollars in damages to these small nations. This demonstration clearly illustrates what happens to the water levels, as the ice melts. Fact or fiction? The EX1's superb light sensitivity created a picture that makes it seem as if the church were brightly-lit. I did use 3dB gain, but the noise was negligable.
All told, it was the lightest, "one carry bag" setup I have ever done, with results that rival a much larger and more cumbersome a/v setup.

"Cloud Metamorphosis" Shot with XDCam EX

"The Perfection of Cloud Movement" --Video & Music by Mark Weiss

This was a series time-lapse sequences of cloud formations.
