Makiling is a 1090 m high inactive volcano located in Laguna province, about 50 km south of Metro Manila. Designated as a protected area, the mountain hosts a variety of wildlife habitats - from lowland forest at the lower slopes to mossy forest at the summit. Many species of birds still abound within this scenic place.

First of a series, this is a collection of bird footages taken at Mt. Makiling on March 4, 2009. GEAR - Canon 5D MII, Sigmonster (Sigma 300-800 DG), Canon 2x TC/Sigma 2x TC, 1600 - 3200 mm, and Manfrotto 475B tripod/3421 gimbal head. All clips were captured in available light. The 1920x1080 capture was edited, background music was added, and converted to a 1280x720 wmv file.

ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. I initially thought (and hoped) that it's the "rare, poorly known" Streaked Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus sorghophilus). The bird was in a clump of reeds at the edge of the pond water and it stayed close to the ground (less than 2 feet from the ground). There was a thin cloud cover, and this affected the seeing conditions very much and produced a glow around the lunar disk. The species is endangered and is currently facing the possibility of extinction due to poachers and food hunters. They can be found only in the Philippines, where they live in caves and rainforests. This nocturnal flying mammal has a wing span of at least 1.5 m (5 ft) and weighs approximately 1.2 kg (3 lbs). A combination of tough lighting in the tree canopy, dark subject vs bright background, and a 2x TC on the Sigmonster resulted into tons of visible CA/fringing, which I've yet to learn to eliminate in video processing.
3.
