I mounted a Nikon D70 DSLR on the roof, and used an old Powerbook with Nikon Capture Control installed to snap a picture every 15 seconds throughout the day. Smoothcam: A test video.

I'm taking a documentary editing class at Cuyahoga Community College, in Cleveland, OH. The facilites are top-notch and I can't wait to start my next class.

Anyways, this is a Smoothcam test to show to my fellow classmates. Some students were asking about stabilizing some of their documentary footage using Smoothcam.

So I want to show my classmates what Smoothcam actually does to your footage.

How it works:
(If my description of how this works isn't in-depth enough for you, then Google it. I'm a filmaker, not a software engineer.)
Smoothcam analyzes your footage, then distorts, rotates and slides it around the frame to keep motion smooth and centered.

Unfortunatly, when it rotates and distorts the footage, you can see the edges of the video frame. So Smoothcam then has to zoom-in to your footage to cover the missing edges. Check out my example.

What you are seeing:
(Yes, the footage has been color-corrected. Maybe not "corrected," but tweaked to my liking.)

The upper left window shows my original footage, straight out of the camera. I either had in-camera image stabilization on (which does the opposite in come cases), or I just wasn't smooth enough with the camera. Either way, the video is jumpy and not smooth at all.

The lower window shows the Smoothcam analysis, with no zooming. Look at the edges of the video frame and how they distort and move around. This is Smoothcam smoothing out my footage.

The upper right window is the final video, zoomed in to cover the moving video edges.

The Result:
Smoothcam did a passable job on my slightly un-smooth footage. Notice just how much the video frame moves around in the lower window. My footage wasn't super bad, just a bit shakey, and Smoothcam had to move the video frame around quite a bit.

Trying to stabilize anything that isn't already passably smooth doesn't work very well.

The event is hosted at the IX Center, which is an old B-52 Bomber factory from way back in WWII times. The building now holds massive trade shows in Cleveland.

This is a video I did for a product that my employer, Http://www.stylintrucks.com, carries.
The video stars Alexander Blair. He's a supervisor in Customer Service at Stylin' Trucks. He's been eager to be in a video and he did a great job.
The product he is selling is called the Snow Brum (like broom, but with a "u".)

It was snowing a lot, a lot a lot, and we took the opportunity to head outside and shoot a video about the product.

I wrote a loose script and a shot list and we headed outside.

This is a product information video for the http://www.stylintrucks.com/sn.aspx?free_text=Fitch+Fuel+Catalyst. Basically, it's a canister that installs within the fuel system of your truck or SUV, or car I guess. Fuel flows from your gas tank and through the Fitch Catalyst, where it is freshened and cleaned, before heading to your engine. It feeds your engine higher quality fuel, giving you better gas mileage and fuel economy, and more power.

This is video I shot on 9/14/08 at the Stylin' Trucks High & Low Truck Show. Full disclosure - I work as the videographer for this company, Http://www.stylintrucks.com.

This is a time-lapse of trucks leaving the show after the awards ceremony - I was a few minutes late in getting set up (last-minute idea) and missed a few trucks. But I got the bulk of them leaving the show.

I also shot a http://exposureroom.com/members/WillMahoney.aspx/assets/24a99e6a901b4b66a54c6652ff2d0bc3/ at the show, though that one was shot with our miniDV cam. This was shot with a Canon XH-A1 HD Camera. Edited (and experimentally color-tweaked) on Adobe Premiere Elements 3.0.

4.5 Hours of Graffiti in 2.5 Minutes - CEPS

Video footage from the 2008 Http://www.stylintrucks.com High & Low Truck Show, 9/14/08, in Independence, Ohio.

We had a local Cleveland, OH graffiti artist come in to do a custom graffiti painting of our company name/logo. His handle is Ceps and his web page is Http://www.myspace.com/getcepsd. This is a mural he painted in four straight hours. I compressed it down to two minutes and eight seconds using the "time stretch" feature in Adobe Premier Elements 3.0.

Canon ZR85, full-auto, left alone except to change tapes.

No audio as of yet. I'm working on a custom piece to use, it'll be a few days. For now, just hum softly to yourself...

I work for aftermarket truck accessory retailer http://www.stylintrucks.com. We had Matt Payne, the VP of sales from Putco, Inc., in for sales training a few weeks ago (yes, we take pride in our work and all of our sales reps are factory trained by the manufacturers themselves.)

While he was here I pulled him into my new studio to do some quick Putco product spots. Here is the video he did for us about Putco Fog Light Bulbs.u

A promotional informational piece about Putco Window Visors. I work for StylinTrucks.com and we had Matt Payne, VP Sales, Putco, in for training. Well I couldn't pass up the opportunity to have an actual professional trainer talk about their product in front of my camera. It worked out well.

We filmed in the new studio that I built in an un-used room of the building. I also used my wireless lav mic to capture audio.

This is a informational web video I did for my employer, Http://www.stylintrucks.com. Basically I just interviewed an employee(http://www.stylintrucks.com/Articles/0507_JWagner_Bio/Article.aspx, a sales coach) who had installed this product on his truck.

I had him wear my wireless lavalier microphone, and I filmed him with my A1 on my http://exposureroom.com/members/WillMahoney.aspx/tutorials/post/32. I fielded him questions about the process (while filming) and he answered them on camera for me. I then snagged a few detail shots (close-ups) and some shots for general atmosphere or silliness, like the one where his truck drives towards me while letting the suspension bottom out.

This is also my first video with a "lower third" on the screen to display the person's name and/or the product. I'm trying to get more professional with my videos, and having nice graphics and titles helps. Luckily, there are great Graphic Designers here at http://www.stylintrucks.com, and they occasionally help me with graphic and image work, as I have no experience with design and/or layout.

Also, it was a super sunny day and I'm obviously still trying to work out the kinks of filming in bright sunlight. For some reason I am always reluctant to turn on the in-cam ND filters. Oh, and the video was created for the http://www.stylintrucks.com/parts.aspx?partfamilyid=258 product page on Stylin' Trucks' web site.

This is the latest product information video that I've completed for my employer, Http://www.stylintrucks.com. The actual product page that hosts the video is http://www.stylintrucks.com/parts.aspx?partfamilyid=6307.

I used the Canon XH-A1. We shot outside, with just a UV filter on the lens, and I used Senior Dempsey's VIVIDRGB preset.

We use a Samson Airline wireless lav mic (also used for the voice-over, recorded the next day.)

Shot in HD, edited in SD timeline. The computer had to do a lot of work to just resize the footage down small enough to work in the SD timeline. This may or may not have taken longer than just editing in an HD timeline. We'll see.

2006 High & Low Truck Show

This was my first ever video job. My employer, Stylin' Trucks (www.stylintrucks.com), was having a truck show and I asked if I could "film the event."

I didn't own a camera at the time, so the company bought a $300 Canon and I went to town. I think it worked out ok.

I now try to use orginal music from local bands for all of my videos, but this was a few years ago. All music credit is at the bottom of the screen for each song, and in the credits of the video.

Hosted by Craig Callander of Cleveland State University's http://www.669radio.com. He's been ranked and voted as the #1 College Radio DJ and has had the #1 College Radio Show in Cleveland for the last I don't know how many years. JCW Spring Car Show Sample Video - Demo Version #1

Also, I initially had some color-correcting and exposure problems with my first run at editing the footage. But I eventually figured out how to tweak the colors and other parameters to get some great-looking footage.

I wrote up four blog posts on my experience working on this video; shooting, color correcting, editing, music selection. If you wanna check them out you can get some insight into what I, as a just-starting videographer, have been going through. Good times.

Here is a test of me trying out my the new shoulder mount that we built for our A1. It's built of different pieces and parts that we found lying around. Its the most simple of simple designs but seems to work ok.
