So, she packed everything she owned into her car, and left Victoria, and headed for the east coast. I was on my way to Halifax, actually, says the sprite, captivating red head. The car had other ideas. The transmission exploded and Vancouvers as far as I got. I fixed the car, got a place, stuck around. Thank Christ it didnt happen somewhere in Manitoba! After performing her own material at local clubs, she finally made it to the East Coast. Not Halifax, though New York, where she has been working with producer Ron Thaler on her second album. Thaler, a multi-grammy nominated drummer and producer (he, too, originally from Vancouver) who has worked with Al Dimeola, Alicia Keys, Rob Thomas, Sophie B. Hawkins and recent grammy nominees Jason Yudoff and Kelly Saint Patrick, is always on the lookout for new talent. When he came across McKinnons web site (www.pipermckinnon.com) he contacted her and said he wanted to meet with her the next time he was in Vancouver. The songs he had heard were from her debut album Letterbox. While in Vancouver, Thaler was invited to play on stage with McKinnon at her latest show and was knocked out by McKinnon's intricate vocal delivery and songwriting while on the piano. "If I hadn't heard her, I wouldn't have believed it," he says. "She absolutely stole my ears right out from under me. I am totally stoked we are gonna work together on her new album." McKinnon recently returned from a second recording session in New York where she and Thaler began paring down the songs destined for Beautiful Disaster, her second international release, due out in the Fall of 2009. McKinnon has been compared to Tori Amos, Kate Bush, Jewel, and Jeff Buckley. These are not bad comparisons. Notwithstanding, McKinnons music also reveals a dark side. If McKinnons muse were to assume physical form, it might look like one of Lucifers fallen angels: beautiful, brooding, scorched by the flames of an epic battle. In one of its better moods, her muse might inspire her to write something whimsical and funky, like an ode to Robert Palmer, something cool and bluesy, like Aint It Funny, or something exquisitely melancholy and pretty, like You Were the Man. On a bad day, it might wake her up in the middle of the night to write a song like Demon, the sum of all her fears: losing her hands, losing her voice, losing herself. That was a really bad dream, McKinnon says. Once, she even woke up to find the lyrics to a song, the Stones of Bayon, written beside her bed. I think those songs are all sort of out there, she says, with a wave. I am just a conduit. While her earlier music was confessional and personal, lately she draws her inspiration from books she reads, like The Dead Sea Scrolls and the Jesus Papers. Not that shes religious, in particular. She just wants to understand why things like September 11 and the London subway bombing happen. Theres a lot about the world that I think has been happening right under my nose, she says The daughter of a Canadian Navy petty officer, McKinnon moved around a lot when she was younger, and has lived has lived on both coasts, but grew up mainly in Victoria. In her teens, some friends dared her to get up and sing a song at a blues jam in Victoria, Love Me Like a Man by Bonnie Raitt. They had no idea what they were starting. The crowd demanded an encore. But the seed was planted. And so the journey continues....

Drive TV Vancouver - Sharad Khare with Scott Jackson

Drive TV Vancouver - Sharad Khare with Scott Jackson
@ The Beaumont

August 26th 2009

http://www.myspace.com/scottjackson

About Scott Jackson

.... " Expertly penned tunes, written from the heart. Vocals delivered with passion, intensity and grace, perfectly paired with lyrics of universal wisdom. Scott Jackson is certainly one of Canadas hidden musical gems...."

Boom Magazine - Moncton

Singer-songwriter Scott Jackson is truly one of Canadas national treasures. if you put Tom petty and U2 in a studio together, Jackson explains, the Scott Jackson sound is what you might end up with!. At the age of 21, Jackson picked up an acoustic guitar and began writing songs. Shortly thereafter, he launched himself onto the Vancouver music scene with the release of his first solo CD, Via Satellite. As a founding member of the band MK Ultra, Jackson went on to record the album Apple, which spent five weeks at the top of the HMV Independent charts. The disc landed the band two Music West headline shows, an opening slot for Nickelback and local radio play on 99.3 The Fox, drawing interest from several major record labels.

The band eventually came to that proverbial "crossroads" characteristic of so many bands and Jackson thus headed in a different direction . From that split, the 6-track EP titled My World was born. The disc introduced the emotionally driven power ballad single, What are we waiting For to the world which garnered attention from across the border and overseas. That song and the song Welcome To My World received subsequent airplay on The Quake FM Radio, KOZI FM Radio, Fearless Radio in Chicago, WDNY in New York, and across Canada. The band toured the States to packed houses following the albums American release.

"My World" won rave reviews from the press, including The Vancouver Province and The Daily Vault. Producer Jerry Wong (Damn The Diva, Bif Naked, Loverboy), was so impressed by My World, that he became Scott's music collaborator. Wong subsequently produced Jackson's most recent full-length album release "Distractions. "Distractions" brags a grocery list of strong writing and melodic hooks, most evident in songs like "Mercy", "when you Gonna Come Down" , "Precious Things", and "Walk a Line". The discs upbeat power single, Cmon Cmon, garnered radio play at over 20 stations across Canada, winnin g against U2 and Green Day, and received a rating of 75% Kool at Kool FM in Kitchener, one of the highest ratings any song has received during the life of that contest. The single is paired with a full-production Video Release which is awaiting airplay on Canadas major video stations.Jackson has taken the internet by storm, with more than 30,000 fans listening more than 500 times a day, on his Myspace.com web page. His fan base extends to south of the border in the States from Washington State to California. Internet radio stations all over the globe have continuously played C'mon, C'mon, and the introspective alternative country track "Precious Things" has received rotation on radio stations in St. Louis, New York, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, as well as Germany and Denmark.

Don Coleman of A&R Group International has this to say about Jackson, Heartfelt, Powerful, Passionate, Deep, Sincere. A natural born wordsmith who senses the truth in all of us and transports the listener to a higher place. Scott Jackson is a hidden gem who hits home run after home run out of the park!

Jackson also works as a Behavior Consultant for Autistic and Developmentally Disabled kids, a vocation he holds very dear to his heart. His vision is to find a way to use music to create a greater awareness of the need for best-practice-treatment for kids with Autism. Over the past few years,Vancouver-based Jennifer has thrust herself head first into the industry on a number of levels. Her initial foray into the record music business, after a life of dreams and teenage rock bands was to concentrate not only on performing,but tp position herself as a up and coming songwriting talent. Almost immediately, Jennifer's knack for moody flavoured pop driven songs landed two of her selections in the Chis Isaak show,broadcast in the US,Canada and several international markets."Full of emotion" written with Mark Ellis,was the first of numerous tracks to be scouted for use on television. "Simple Pleasures" was used thereafter, in the Showtime series "Higher Ground". Stepping back onto the stage, Jennifer was invited to be part of a worldbeat fusion act called Balligomingo. Pheonix born Garret Schwartz and Burnaby based Vic levak collaborated on the writing and production of "Sweet Allure" which was not only a club hit in Australia,but also,ascended to the top 5 Billboard Dance Chart in November of 2002. While further developing her own material on guitar and with assorted diverse collaborators,a novelty pop song penned by Jennifer with Davor Vulama (Blackie and The rodeo Kings,Coco Lee) was recorded in Taiwan by Asian pop duo Michelle and Vickie. "Kissy Kissy", an uptempo song brought out every pop confection in Jennifer's arsenal, and sold in excess of 25,000 units in Taiwan and became the title track of the Sony BMG release throughout the chinese speaking markets. It was also used as a jingle in a major television campaign for a jeans company. Reuniting with Levak,she returns home to work with a collaborator who knows her voice. Jennifer continues to do various gigs throughout B.C and the lower mainland. She continues to contribute songs to other projects such as Lian Cole's forthcoming debut with songs like "Before i Walk Away". She sees herself as an artist on a mission,an observer of great music and a songwriter on the rise.

Drive TV Vancouver - 1. MacDougall born in Sweden and living in Vancouver doubles the love. When I first heard her voice on this record 'The Ballad of Sherri' it was shrouded, a scratchy sound - one string guitar sounding like it was recorded in a cardboard box, her voice still entranced and when the full colour version arrives later in the song, it was too late, I was already smitten. Any remnants of reluctance were dissolved by 'Ramblin'' which is built from a pool of tears and has the kind of chorus that breaks hearts and connects at some emotional level. She sings 'I don't want to be alone anymore' and I'm checking flight times to BC whilst making favourable comparisons to Neko Case. MacDougall is dramatic though in a more matter of fact way - it just so happens that she has a beautiful voice - The songs aren't so much showcases for her voice, the voice is put to work in the service of the songs.

Heartbreak is what she does. 'I've Got Sorrow' is a lament where she cradles the lyrics with the passion and devotion of someone holding on to the hand of a loved one who is slipping away. She questions mortality on Crow's Lament' where she wonders where birds go to die and says 'Goodbye Julie' with an air of finality and no small measure of tenderness as she goes deeper and higher than she does elsewhere. She'll be crossing the Atlantic to tour England throughout May and June and with this record acting as a primer it'd be just as well getting your tickets early." - AMERICANA UK, DAVID COWLING

"MacDougall s latest effort, Across the Atlantic (due out in early 2009 on Copperspine Records) is a moving blend of Scandinavian folk and indie Americana. From sing-a-long ditties to heart-breaking epics, Across the Atlantic gracefully highlights the hook, energy, and honesty of one of the most promising exports to come out of Sweden since ABBA rolled into town drunk on Absolute in their Volvo station wagon." - R. C. Joseph, 24 hours, Vancouver,

"Most accurately described as Scandinavian country music, the album s 10 songs present country music in a refreshingly new context with elements of folk, world and old minstrel music. As a songwriter MacDougall writes engaging lyrics wrapped around appealing melodic hooks and her voice is as beguiling as it s captivating (in her low register she resembles Eliza Gilkyson). She also shows considerable skill as a producer weaving a variety of musical threads into a fascinating musical tapestry."- The Record

"What a great record she has! It has easily been my most played CD this year so far"- James Windsor, promoter Cosmic American

"This newish Vancouver singer-songwriter offers up a tasty collection of mid- tempo alt-folk tunes marked by classy instrumentation beyond that of your average Canadian folkie. As a singer, MacDougall has the honeyed pipes of Austin folkie Eliza Gilkyson, but as a composer she calls to mind such arty CBC Radio favourites as Danny Michel and Christine Fellows. The violin and cello work is particularly fine. The title track, about a trip to her native Sweden, is a standout. So is the closer, Goodbye, Julie, which along with the first track, Song For Sherri, should solidify her following among the crowd."- Winnipeg Free Press

"Sarah MacDougall, Hundred Dollar Bills (Copperspine): Swedish-born Vancouverite delivers a vivid snapshot of urban poverty. MacDougall doesn t name names, but the dark shadow of Willie Pickton looms over the verse about corpses in the fields. " - Instant Playlist, Georgia Straight

"With her melancholy dark voice she takes us on a trip through unhappy love, dying crows and satire. Sarah proves that she soon will belong to the big players within Americana/Alternative country...This is what Vancouver should sound like." - Top 3 of 2008, svullbuk.blogspot.com,(DJ Dake, promoter at Mosebacke, Stockholm)

"Sarah MacDougall was mesmerizing and gave a truly blinding performance. Her first visit to Swindon went down really well with the audience who raved over her magnificent vocals and delightful songs many of which were full of quirky lyrics about life as it is today...Sarah s songs mixed traditional country with a dash of folk resulting in a phenomenal sound." - Maverick Magazine

"Sarah s music is honest, open, and beautiful - it makes an immediate emotional connection with the listener."- Steve Bellamy, Juno-winning Music Producer/Engineer

"a beautiful voice fronting rustic-leaning songs.....the perfect soundtrack to an Appalachian train hopping journey"......- Meeghan Maultsaid, Artistic director, Under the Volcano Festival Vancouver

Drive TV Vancouver - Sharad Khare with Evelyn Yngveson (2)

Drive TV Vancouver - Sharad Khare with Evelyn Yngveson
@the cultch
July 15th 2009

http://www.myspace.com/evolina

About Ev:
Grrl singer w/ guitar and sometimes piano. For the most part, records composed of strong, song-based rock n' roll in the classic way, with frequent detours into the shady musical sidestreets. Elements of 70's glam, Nashville twang, hard city blues, country-folk, Brill building balladry, power pop, Southern soul & even the occasional hip-hop & metal are all filtered through a uniquely powerful lyrical view. At the heart of these sounds lies the unvarnished voice, bloodied but unbowed. Possibly an acquired taste, but this world certainly doesn't need anymore cookie-cutters or even virtuosos behind the mic. Truth, however, is never out of demand. This music will remind you of a time when you could put faith in that voice coming out of the speakers. Where listening to a record could actually give you the secret codes to live your life by. Plus, it's FUN!! Murdoch began writing songs for the project in 2003 while completing his degree in creative writing and environmental studies at York University in Toronto, and pining for his west coast home. The Nautical Miles were recruited by mail correspondence, and formed during a summer back home. In their five years together, they have built a repertoire of richly textured and emotionally complex folk music. Their songs tell stories steeped in the natural and emotional histories of the Pacific-Northwest. Migratory mammals, people who swim across oceans, and long-forgotten revolutionary figures all become subjects in the narratives The Nautical Miles spin.
Their first full-length record, Tell me again how this place got its name was released in 2006 with critics remarking on the quality of the writing- "This is writing that comes from the pen of someone who knows his craft" -and the lush, intricate arrangements- "Music that rolls like the prairie hills, rises like the rocky coastline and swells like the ocean waves". The album was named one of the top ten albums of 2007 by Eden Monroe, music editor at Edmonton's VUE Weekly.

Since its release, the band has toured across the country, showcased at Canadian Country Music Week and The Western Canadian Music Awards, and Murdoch has toured solo in the UK, Sweden, Denmark and Poland, including a stop at the legendary Isle of Wight Festival.

Now, in 2009, the band is releasing their most ambitious project to date. Wartime Lovesong, their third release, is a song cycle of generational proportions. The album, much of which is arranged for brass quintet, traces the trials of a generation desperately seeking a purpose in an uncertain world. At once politically charged and deeply personal, The Nautical Miles have once again created a dynamic and moving document of their explorations as an ensemble.

Drive TV Vancouver - Sharad Khare with Jeff Hawker

@the cultch

She could harmonize to any song that was playing, and she would perform for people at any given moment. These early roots are the platform of the artist she is today. Vicky is a gifted vocalist, a passionate performer, and an emotive songwriter. Her lyrics are captivating, and her voice commands attention with its velvety tone and soft inflections. Vicky has recorded vocals for pop/rock, country, hip-hop, electronica, and ambient projects. Her voice can be found on Limblifters Alarm Bells and she has performed live with several acts including 4Play, Jazzberry Ram, Melanie Dekker, Jim Foster, Kevin Mackenzie, LTD featuring DJ Nafa and DJ Red, and Billy Dixons Soul Train Express.. Vicky has also been a featured artist on many stages, including the 2007 Global Habitat Festival (Friends of Live Earth), the Penthouse Songwriters Circle, Chix with Pix, and the Bluebird North Songwriting Series. There is no end to Vickys passion for singing, performing, and collaboration. Vicky is a driven artist that is no stranger to hard work. For 6 years, she sang lead for the nationally acclaimed pop band Cherrybomb. As a true independent project, Vicky managed promotions, bookings, touring, and recording, earning the band distribution with Maple Music, and taking the band to remarkable heights.
