It reflects the Michigan Avenue buildings, the sky, and the people around and under it (where the reflected images are wildly distorted). It is an amazing sight!

While editing this video, I found the ProDAD Mercalli image stabilizing software plugin for the Sony Vegas Pro 8 editing software a great help for smoothing the video footage taken with the very small Canon HV20 camcorder (which I handheld without my usual camera brace). I did find it useful to add a bit of sharpening to the string of filters used on the footage (with Mercalli last) to offset its normal image softening.

Since I had used a mono short shotgun microphone on the HV20 for this video (it is the least wind sensitive of all my mics, especially with its added "fuzzy"), I tried various ways while editing to produce simulated stereo sound. I was not happy with the results from methods I had read about, but I found that by reducing the audio level by about 3db in a sound editor (I like the simple and easy to use Cool Edit 2000) and introducing 3-4 4db peaks and dips through the midrange of each channel with the peaks and dips of one channel corresponding with the dips and peaks of the other, that I had an acceptable "stereo" video track.

(Note: The video compression necessary to make internet streaming practical may cause the image to appear to move with some "jogging" during pans that is not in the original - and for the smoothest playback in HD, it may be necessary to play the video twice.)

"PRETTY RHODHODHENDHRONS" (Rhododendrons...) in HD

"PRETTY RHODODENDRONS" is a flowing video exploration of the beauty of the flowers and the hilltop pine woods environment of the rhododendron collection of the Cornell University Plantations.

I had considerable difficulty editing this video with Sony's Vegas Pro 8b software, and NOTHING I tried (including stripping the computer bare of all software and files, slow-reformating the drives, replacing the RAM, checking all the hardware, and selectively reloading only the important software) prevented random red/black frames and odd timing glitches from appearing in the exported video. When I was near the end of this edit, Sony fortunately released a beta version of a .dll file, which when installed, cured most of the problems I had been having with editing HDV. Since then, Sony has released version 8c, which appears to be fine.

(Note: The video compression necessary to make internet streaming practical may cause the image to appear to move with some "jogging" during pans that is not in the original - and for the smoothest playback in HD, it may be necessary to play the video twice.)

"SQUARES" (A Geometric Animation) in HD

"SQUARES" (a geometric animation) was made using many 1920x1080 "panels" I produced using Micrografx Picture Publisher (a photo editing program). The files of the panels were placed directly on the Sony Vegas Pro 8 timeline and manipulated using the program's FX and transitions to introduce the motions, image chopping, blurring, etc. seen in the video. The music was made using some of my old MIDI keyboard work, modified and mixed (the viewer may recognize "Mary Had A Little Lamb").

"STEWART PARK IN INFRARED"

Infrared photography has interested many, but I find infrared video more satisfying. This B&W video was made in an Ithaca, New York city park, and it shows the other-worldly effects possible with infrared videography. These include numerous large and small waterfalls (with the highest free-fall waterfall east of the Mississippi, Taughannock Falls), many glens, gorges, streams, lakes (both small and quite large), forests, rolling hills, and several NY State Parks (including Robert Treman, Buttermilk falls, Taughannock, Treman Marina, and the nearby Watkins Glen State Parks). Ithaca is also the home of Cornell University and Ithaca College - Cornell, with world famous research specialties, and both with many highly respected educational specialties. Ithaca is also a center for the visual arts, music, and theater. Cornell's Herbert F. Johnson art museum and the many local galleries provide places to show and see work. There are several theaters in Ithaca that present first-rate plays (with often new experimental work shown). There are also several performance halls for music here, and several festivals (such as Grassroots and Ithaca Festival) and many concerts of interest for visitors and residents alike which include folk, popular, jazz, classical, and modern classical music (and many famous musicians and singers call Ithaca home, and their work is supported by the presence of many local recording studios here). Ithaca has opportunities for fishing, boating, hiking, and golfing - and for watching sports like football, hockey, etc. For a small upstate NY city on the edge of one of the Finger Lakes, Ithaca has a surprisingly large variety of things to see and do, some of which are shown in this video. The group performed numerous concerts and put out some recordings before breaking up - and some of its members have since gone on to singing careers on their own.

In shooting this video, I was limited by the flat stage lighting, by the inability to move either of the two cameras around due to the overflow attendance, and by having to sit next to the woman who hired me on one side (who often adjusted her digital camera, which "beeped") and a kid on the other (whose seat I provided if he would promise not to get up, not to cross in front of me, and not to bump my tripod, all of which he did...). In addition, I took a sound feed from the house mixing console, not knowing that microphone checks would be made during the performance that would leave those mics "dead" for me during the checks. And, finally, I lost a frame from one of the best pieces that was still left in the edit while making this ER version. But, with much editing, there was still enough left for a video...
