This is the Performance version of the video. I am currently working on a "wrap around" story to go with the video. The color in the video is still a work in progress.

I was given the opportunity to film my first official music video with Bipolar Echo. They are fresh out of the studio and needed a video for their first single. Being my last week in the Oklahoma Panhandle, I figured I had better take advantage of wheat harvest before it was too late.

Bipolar Echo rocks. Period. More info soon.

I opened with a time lapse shot of sunrise at 6:30am on Saturday and ended with a time lapse shot from Columbus Circle, ending the shoot at 7:30pm.

Camera Settings and Accessories
The opening shot was shot at 600iso with full open Shutter and aperture. It was the only shot in the video that I used my good ol' EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. It was a little too grainy for my taste (and a little too blown out) so I vowed to shoot at 300iso for the rest of the trip... which I did except for the Skyline shots. After a nap, we walked down 8th and hit a few shops before finding one that had the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS.

PLUG: NY Camera & Electronics at 494 on 8th will match any price... and upsell you like a champ. They had plenty of lenses though and have no problem with letting you slap their lenses on your Camera Body. Service may vary depending on who is at the counter.

The lens typically comes stock with the 7D, but I really jumped the gun and wanted the 7D sooner than it was widely available and I settled for body only. It cost me an extra $200 in the end, but at least I feel like I earned the right to use the lens... in some odd way. The lens works great, but in the subway, if I did any zooming at all, I would lose a lot of light... I mean A LOT. I tried to keep the lens full open when shooting in low light. It was hard to keep the ISO at 300... but "Look Ma, No Grain!"

The skyline shots from the Empire (that I used) were set to full Automatic.

For the most part I used my 561BHDV Video Monopod with Fluid Head for shots on the street and the subway. On the Empire State Building, I had to go handheld since they do not allow any pods. It was really windy and cold and the building was swaying... so LOTS of stabilizing in post. All of Time Square shots and the Time Lapse footage were shot from my 503HDV,351MVB2K Aluminum Video Tripod Kit. I shot a few shots at 60FPS and did slo-mo (The only reason to ever shoot with 60FPS in my opinion). I did this in 30fps, but plan to shoot everything else (Besides TV ad's) in 24p.

My wife and I had an amazing shoot and I am finally getting the hang of this cam. I'm looking forward to future 7D projects!

Also: Props to Adrien Veczan, the photographer who posed for the image at 1:26. He does some great work I discovered. He is secluded because he is a mean 1000lb gator that doesn't get along with the other Gators. Naturally I walk right in.

While walking in, he swung his tail at Chris the Gator Wrangler and snapped in my direction. This raw edit shows Chester hissing at me after I got my shots. Chris called another wrangler to come around and distract good ol' Chester so I could escape without being bitten or tail swipped.

Good times at Gator Land. My Cousin Haas asked me to photograph his wedding and of course, I had to shoot video. lots of video. I decided for the video I should go linear (until the very end) and see how it turned out. This is definitely the longest wedding video I've done to date. Improvising with the mic situation produced some uneven results, but nothing too horrible. It was a great time and I am glad I could take part in such a great wedding. This is the first time I used After Effects for color correction. I filmed the Oaks of Mamre footage just before showing up to the Girls Game. By the end of the Second Half of the Boys game I saw the overheating icon. This was very odd as I had never seen it before. When I was dumping files (to my MacBook) I took the battery out and left both the CF Card and Battery Hatches open to let some cool air in. That would give me more time, but sure enough, I would have the overheating icon again after a while.

Music Used in the Mix:
Justice - Genesis
David Banner - Get Like Me
DJ Khaled - S On My Chest
Jay-Z & Linkin Park -Dirt Off Your Shoulder - Lying From You
Kanye West - Stronger

Equipment and Software:
Camera: Canon 7D
Lenses: Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS, EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS
Software Final Cut Pro, Soundtrack Pro, Photoshop, Magic Bullet Looks
Other: Manfrotto 501HDV/75

The Artist

This is my non-submission version for the second chapter of The Story Beyond the Still, a contest being held by Canon and Vimeo.

In this short, the still from the end of Chapter 1, The Cabbie, turns out to be a drawing done by an artist in a rehabilitation clinic. I decide to make a time-lapse before heading out on New Years Day. I cross the Freeway and brush past some reeds to find a moist marsh. I find a downed telephone pole and hop up. I set up my tripod and decide to just go automatic to see how the 7D adjusts on it's own (will never do that again). It's much too foggy to make out the skyline, but I'm dedicated. I look down to see a few inches of water at the base of my tripod. I think it's odd... like maybe my tripod is sinking. A few minutes later it's half a foot deep.

By the end of the shoot the tide brought in just over a foot of water to were I was standing. I take down my tripod and just leap into the icy cold Atlantic and slosh my way to the hotel. Never wear Chuck Taylor's in a marsh. For this concert I wanted to roll with 3 cameras with one in the back and one on each wing of the stage. As a last minute decision we went with a behind the back curtain shot. It seemed to work out pretty cool... though my attempts to move the tripod while filming didn't turn out to be as hot as I hoped.

This was also the first time I had the pleasure of getting to work with a Zoom H4n Handy.
