Since then, between stealing my lenses for his GH2, singer Olly Knights and I have been concocting a way to work together again on a video. My crazy schedule has made this difficult...we will soon though...in the meantime he sent me this track from their new EP "Xerox" which set off all sorts of ideas in my head. I couldn't have the band in it as they were on tour in the UK with their THE OPTIMIST: Live tour so I threw ideas at Olly to see what stuck..I wanted to capture some haunting images and this came to mind...It may technically be a music video but this is real. These people are real. The situation they are in is real. This gave me the chance to do some good from this hopefully and raise awareness. Homelessness is nothing new but often forgotten about.

I messed around with the slow motion 300 FPS first thing but I really wanted to shoot a little piece with it so we found the Great Lakes Boat Building Company online. Phoned them up and asked if we could spend two hours with them making a little film...Mike, the owner said of course!

Watch the film then read description!

A short film that I decided to shoot in a few hours after the Majorca Masterclass after guided 6 teams to shoot their own pieces the next day I had to shoot for myself!

It stars the exquisite Nina K from Georgia (who's real name is Nino but she goes by Nina to avoid people confusing her gender!) and my new friend Ronad Vonk from Rotterdam.

Both where students at the Masterclass and stayed on to help me shoot this little film I had in my head. This version is actually the very dark version. The original idea is the same edit with one additional scene and if you are familiar with a lot of the DSLR community watch the end credits to understand further... You can see that edit here: http://gopb.co/3i

This is shot on a Sony F3 simply because I have not really shot anything on my new F3 since I got so this was the perfect chance. Although much of this would have been great with the DSLRs. this camera is simply an absolute beauty.A joy to shoot with despite the lack of handheld rig, adored the results and so easy to grade even though i just used XDCAM EX internal. Left my KiPro mini at home in England! :(

Lenses were the Zeiss CP.2 85mm, and the old Cooke made RED lens branded 18-50 lens. I had others with me but this was alll I needed!

The handheld is shaky for a reason...it's handheld!!

Steadicam would give it a total wrong feel. So mixture of organic handheld and locked off tripod shots...

Check out my blog soon for info including a commentary,BTS video and loads of info!

Starring Nina K, Ronald Vonk

Original score by Cédric Conti. Big thanks to him! Beautiful.

I spent 17 years working in news and have seen countless horrors and covered hideous stories. This film sums up just what horrors there are out there for me very simply.

Most of my work is gentle. I wanted to make a little piece which was totally different to my other work, never shot or directed a scene like the one near the end.

This film's concept is very simple. Utter beauty shattered by a moment of senseless ugliness. Something that happens in the world countless times every day.

Terminus

PLEASE LISTEN THROUGH HEADPHONES, it's a totally different experience!!!

A little short piece for my end of the world challenge. The idea was to create a sense of impending doom through visuals and audio...

Sounds best through headphones due to the sound recorded on the 3D mic pro (did I already say that?)

My original much more ambitious plan fell through the day before. Due to screwed up schedules we lost the actor and location so I decided to just go and shoot a little something to get a feel for camera.

My first play with the Arri Alexa.

Sound recorded on location with the 3D Mic Pro by Mitra into a Tascam DR100.

If you are worried about the fish. A fisherman had just caught it and I simply shot it where it lay. It was already dead. Just nerves twitching...

Do watch the above Part 1 it's more interesting and has all the nice shots! Part 2 is me just going over the features and the pros and cons of all the camcorders.

This has a more in depth look at the FS100 than the other two as it's a new camera that we don't know much about so it functions as a review of it too.

There is the odd bit of silliness in there, you need it as it's so long!

Disclaimer:

This comparison has be done by myself and with the help of Suresh Kara from Documovie.co.uk for fun. We have tried be as accurate as possible but there will always be anomalies due to the shoot being conducted in the "real world" not in a studio. Do not treat anything in here as gospel. We don't therefore neither should you!

Neither Canon, Sony or Panasonic have paid us any money for this. Sony did supply me with the FS100 to check out but no money exchanged hands, they simply wanted my opinion on it.

This was done in our own free time to give people more information about these new camcorders. Both myself and Suresh are AF101 owners and have been very curious how the new FS100 compares. I am also a recent Sony F3 owner. This is not a Zacuto shootout or anything similar. It is primarily about camera operation and features with a few shots thrown in to compare. I am coming at this from a cameraman's point of view as to what it is like to shoot with this.

Of course the temptation to obsess over the difference in each image is strong, resist it. Sure, do that with the Zacuto shoot out but not this. There are far too many anomalies for that. Even my first low light test I screwed the AF settings up and had to reshoot it. This was done for fun and to give more information to people out there like myself and Suresh. Never buy a camera based upon one person's opinion. Always try it out first, especially if you are spending thousands!

AF100 vs F3 vs FS100 Part 1: The real world

I should have realised how tricky this would be to do right but I am glad I did. This has been an immense amount of work. I wanted to do a "real world" comparison test of the above cameras with a Canon 5DmkII along for the ride to see how it compares.

It's not a Shootout like the Zacuto one coming in June but a comparison on how they are to operate, the features they offer and of course a look at their images.

Part 2 goes in depth looking at the various features, but this is the pretty one with all the shots! Enjoy!

We start off with normal timelapse and then go into the 3 and 7 bracket tone mapped HDR timelapses.

I wanted to create a sense of colour and insanity that Las Vegas gives you. All from one view point. My balcony. With that restriction can you do it? Well I did it before in my two previous timelapses...

This was harder in a way as there was no single focal point like in the Sydney Harbour piece or the Space Needle piece.

I made a virtue of the HDR tone mapping with the change of pace in the music and also my use of bookends which I love.

There is a very detailed commentary on my website which goes into each shot in detail. It's worth a listen. http://philipbloom.net/?p=13307

Shot on a pre-production Canon 7d.

I took the Canon 7d, Zacuto Tactical rig, Z-Finder V2 and one lone lens, a Canon 35mm f1.4, which becomes more like a 50mm lens on the 7d. So a bit like what I did with Sofia's People (but I didn't have the Zacuto rig for that).

I shot 1/50th of a second as I was shooting 24p and to match the 50hz frequency of the artificial all around me in Temple Bar.

I also shot some stuff 720p 50p with shutter at 1/100th to get the slow motion shots of the juggler which were conformed to 23.98p in Cinema tools to create the beautiful slow motion.

Sound on the last bit was just the internal mono cam mic as I didn't want a big mic on top of the camera.

Big thanks To Darragh and Emma for organizing the workshop.
