I have been using a Canon XL H1 for around 15 months now, having made the jump from a Vx2100 then Sony Z1. I love the XL H1, the quality, the looks, the functionality. Sure there are a few grips..evf anyone? but my blog today is not about the camera, its about the use of a 35mm adapter with the camera and imparticular the Redrock m2.
I have had the m2 for over a year now, initially I slapped it on my camera, went out shot, came back and... oh my god it looks garabge w t h..?
I needed to set it up properly, do some research on settings, techniques, do and dont's.
I learned a lot from people like Steven Dempsey and Barlow Elton, who frequent the usual forums and video sites. The results got better, but the most important thing was to get out, shoot, experiment and learn.
Take today for instant, I went with my parents to a place called, Swinsty resoviour, my experience has shown me and taught me things to look for, conditions, direction of sun, cover and available light.
I knew as soon as I got out of the car, conditions were not good, sun too high, bad water reflections, bad angle, I think this comes from experience. I knew when, where, and what time I should return for perfect conditions. I didn't want burnt out skies with no detail, too much water reflected hot spots, or sun in wrong position.
The Redrock has changed the way I see things and the way I work. No more wasted shots, or tape, I know before I turn the camera on, what results I will achieve, I think this is the first step in becoming an accomplished film maker. I am sure other people will agree with me, you just start to see and feel things differently.
I also found the m2, made shooting more relaxed, intially it was stressful. It makes your shooting slower, but more controlled. Maybe Steven or Barlow would like to add to this blog with their thoughts. learning about prime and stock len's sweet spots also helped, I learned alot about filming and techniques by using the m2 including when to shut down, workable fstops, shutter timing and when to effectively use them, maybe you could also.
Thanks for reading.
Andy.
