NT LIVE trailer
Last month I was hired by Director Mike Marriage of Lunarfilms.co.uk to DP a commercial for the big screen to be shown in movie theaters around the world.
NT LIVE is a groundbreaking concept of putting on plays at the National Theatre in London and broadcasting them live to cinemas all over the world via Satellite.
The first play is "Phedre" on the 25th June with Helen Mirren
This was the first time my work would be shown on the big screen and the first time anything I have shot has been transferred to 35mm film. I have yet to see it in print but soon I hope!
It was shot on the Sony EX3 with the Letus Ultimate and mostly Zeiss Nikon lenses. Lighting was with a mixture of Kino Flo Diva's and Dedos.
The voice over was done by the great John Shrapnel. The Helicopter shots were done on the F900. All shot 24p.
Free Energy
Irish engineers say they have built a device that creates free and clean energy. Until now most scientists have dismissed their claims, saying that they break the most basic laws of physics. So the inventors have come up with a unique challenge.
I edited this piece for Sky News reporter Robert Nisbet. Apart from following the guidelines as to where the 'explainer graphics' and grabs (talking heads) go, it was left up to me to flex my creative muscles as I wished. What I particularly like here is the steam-punk inspired top.
Broadcast: Sky News, September 2006
Buzz Aldrin
I cut this piece for the US elections - part of a series called "If I Were President". Buzz Aldrin, the second man to walk on the moon on 20 July 1969, talks about the importance of re-invigorating space exploration.
I was lucky to be involved from a very early point in the production process. The ideas for immersing Aldrin in a continuous 'space' background came from me. I also helped organise and direct the 3 camera blue screen shoot.
Because NASA's media is copyright free, I downloaded all the high-res stills I needed from the web. But a quirk of Quantel and the setup we are working with is that I cannot import media of different resolutions on to my timeline. So, those high-res stills would normally have been compressed into 1024x576 pixels - output resolution. That would not have worked for this video. I needed them as high-res stills, so that I could pan around. The solution was to cut the stills up into "screen-sized" rectangles. Some of these ended up as 9 panels (3 wide x 3 high). Back on Quantel I stitched them back together to end up with the kind of high res images that allowed for lots of panning around.

Shakespeare's England?
This is an 'authored' piece, which means it is presented by the person telling their story or expressing their point of view. In this case it is Lord Hattersley, an English politician, waxing lyrical about the English countryside and going on about not going on about what it means to him to be English. (You'll see what I mean.)
It is one of two special pieces I cut for "DisUnited Britain" - the theme for St Georges Day, England's national day. National identity is a very complicated topic in this country and has very different meanings for people living in the UK today. Lord Hattersley's is one of a great variety of disparate voices.
The challenge here was coping with Hattersley mistakenly being told not to look at the camera. I had to cut around that to make it look a little less awkward.
But what I really like about this piece is how I used the track by Elgar. His music was a discovery for me and I love the way it helps to create a satisfying structure.

Music: Adagio (Nimrod), Elgar
2007 Year In Review Intro
At the end of 2007, I edited an hour long "Year In Review" programme for Sky News, looking back at story highlights ranging from weather, sport, showbiz, science, crime, politics and any specific events that may have left their mark for British viewers that year.
In addition to the broadcast edit, I cut another version that was released as DVD to readers of the Daily Telegraph newspaper.
Here is the treated top to that piece, which sets up the weather chapter and is preceded by Adam Boulton's piece to camera - so give it a moment...
Broadcast: Sky News, Dec-Jan 2008; plus Daily Telegraph DVD

Hamilton Fitness
Why do Formula 1 racing drivers need to be fit? Sky News sports journalist Ian Dovaston learns the hard way as Lewis Hamilton's personal trainer puts him through the paces.
Ian did a great job of playing up to the camera and I loved working with the very beautifully shot Mclaren Formula 1 footage. Obviously none of the slo-mo picture had any audio. I am therefore particularly pleased at how well the fake "slo-mo audio" works that I cobbled together from various sources on the last shot. The graphics sequence in the middle was made by the Sky News graphics department.
