A remake of the Ulu Ulu Resort. This one focuses more on the resort. Question. What would make you want to come here? The resort or the filming/relaxation/ambience of the rainforest. Incidently, there are no mosquitoes at the park. A far cry from the gazillions we have here in the main city area.

I think what would make it enticing for me would be the following:
1. I’d like to get an idea of what I’d see there. Parts of the rainforest, sights etc. with people at these sights.
2. I’d like to get an idea of the kinds of activities possible, preferably by seeing footage of tourists in these activities.
3. I’d like to see parts of the resort. But with people. So if it’s a conference room or a dining room/restaurant etc. I’d like to see it with people. I’d like to see resort staff interacting with guests as well. The lobby/reception the rooms etc.
So essentially it boils down to showing people (as a potential tourist/guest) I immediately put myself in their shoes and can imagine being there and therefore wanting to be there.

If the idea of the resort is, “Come here to the secluded part of this rain forest and get away from the hustle and bustle of your everyday life”, then I’d show people preferably a couple (different couples for different activities) doing stuff. In the dining room I’d space them apart (to give the sense of space privacy etc.). But without people doing what the stuff that I’m supposed to come there for, I won’t really get it (I don’t think).

David,

I will address your question as to what would make a better promotional video.

I love the nature shots, the butterflies, the drops of water, and the river bends with rapidly moving water. I also love the resort shots, and between the two, I'd be there, finances notwithstanding.

The focus needs to be with the resort, and one "steps out" to the rainforest as, of course, the main attraction.

You've done a good job of that, but maybe you could relate the two -- resort and rainforest -- a little more . For instance, you could use the classic technique of showing someone on the porch "looking out", and then the viewer sees what that person is looking at (using one of your outdoor shots). This helps bring the various pieces into one integrated whole.

Your shots are great, and I would agree with Shiv that with a few more people in the resort shots, espcially your "target" types of people, one would be able to mentally transport oneself to that place more easily.

Shiv/Peg:
Summary - People :) Yeah. that's what was missing from the first cut i made and i told the resort management that. It was one reason why I didnt use much of the room footage because i felt it was quite bare.. The villas themselves were quite cosy and comfortable and definitely luxury in the forest stuff.. but we went on the off-season.. and the resort itself was recently renovated by the new management. We were actually told they may be people kayaking but that didnt happen. My guide and I waited for hours to be the footage of the tourists on the hanging bridge and the only consistent tourist there was a french wildlife photographer, Jorge, who was in Borneo collecting wildlife imagery for his new book.
I guess to make it better, the management would have to get us to go out there again... during the busier times.
Thank you for your feedback.

Before I read any of the comments, I came to the same conclusion as the comments above...people! If you ever watched one of those promotional videos for cruise lines, you hardly ever see a shot without people having fun. As you've said above, you worked with what you had at the moment. Haven't we all had to do that? If this is a promotional video, would it benefit to have some subtle CG on the bottom? I.E. "river tours", "5-star restaurant" or whatever. I really, really like some of the nature shots. Wow! Beautiful. I would go there in a heartbeat. Did you use the letus for all the shots? It looked like some of them were a wider angle.

David Cheok    May 16, 2008 10:25 AM
Thanks Todd.

Letus was only used with the macro insect footage. Everything else was the wonderful Fujinon lens. In fact, I'd rather shoot native than with the letus unless I needed some extra shallow DOF or specialty lens shots (like the macros).

For the CG.. nah.. I find those rather a distraction. Coming a photojournalistic approach, I'd rather the imagery tell the story if I can. It doesnt always work though :)
