Another short that I shot with the Canon 7D. Its a dreary time of year here in Upstate New York. Not much light or color. Very short days. I went to a waterfall not too far from my house that has an old abandoned mill next to it.

I used the indiSlider in a lot of these shots to add some interest. I call this piece NOVEMBER GRAY, though in reality, the 7D captured alot of color in these scenes! It continues to amaze me. I also shot this one at 1080 24p. I also used the stock lens that cvame in the kit for some of the closeups of the waterfall. Its the 28-135 f.3.5-5.8 IS Canon Lens. Its tack sharp and the depth of field is quite nice when you are zoomed in, even though it's only a f5.8 lens at that point.

I did some color correction, mainly to adjust white balance, I was shooting so early after sun up that the color temperature was changing quite rapidly.

The music is from Digital Juice. Vol. 50 the song is called MOVING FORWARD.

Your getting excellent results from the Canon 7D. The colors are well balanced and have a nice luminosity. I'm sure some of this also has to do with the software you are using and the protocol and codecs you use for rendering. I would love to know more about the process that you use.

I bet your thinking... This sure beats using the Sony EX1, Letus and lens out in the woods? For me, the textures in this piece are what I found myself looking at. Your right, tack sharp video and excellent use of the advantages of depth of field available in this camera. A good axample of the beuatiful things around us every day that, for the most part, go unnoticed by most. Although an event videographer for the most part, I try to "reveal the unseen" through a lens also. As usual, great work.

I'm enjoying what you are doing with this tool...

I'm enjoying what you are doing with this tool...I picked up one this week and I will down to Mexico to test it out. You are getting me excited about testing the D7, Great work!!

Gary,
Nothing too fancy on the process. I transcode to XDCAM EX (ProRes files are too big!), edit the raw files, color correct if needed then export my master in FCP to the same codec (XDCAM EX). Then I take that MASTER file and use MPEG STREAMCLIP to make an H.264 file that is 1280x720, native frame rate (this case 23.97) and restrict it to 5000kbps. That's it!

Ron,

You said it! This is soooo much better then lugging the EX and Letus combo (19 lbs!) into the wild. The advantages of this camera far outweigh the negatives.

Thanks for the kind words about the video. I love to pick out the tiny details in an area that others look right past! I often force myself to stay in an area for a set amount of time just so I make myself REALLY LOOK for things to shoot!

William,

You will love this camera! However it takes some getting used to. You'll want some ND filters to shoot in bright outdoors and still keep your F-stop open (F2.8 or lower for shallow depth of field) and your shutter speed low. (Double the spped your shooting at, 29.97, use 60, for 23.97 use 50 (there is no 48). Any higher numbers and you get strobe looking movements. I stack a linear polarizer on top of a circualr polarizer and you have a FADER ND type of filter that you can dial in the exposure like a second iris wheel!

Best of luck!

Thanks for tips

And yes going from an EX1 controls and this is so different, but I enjoying what I could get of this camera.

Paul,
Thanks for the protocol. I will have to give streamclip a try!

Gary,

You really should. Its a free download and is also useful to pull apart DVDs. You set in and out points on the DVD and render those sections to QTs. Can't tell you how many times a client hands me a DVD as source video for a project! Now you can pull out just what you want.
