Hello Romy,

Interesting and surprising to see that there is enough sensibility to catch Jupiter , but I asked myself if it wouldn't be better using less TCs and croping the picture by software ? Perhaps did you tried that ?

Laurent.

Very awesome... though I have to admit I was looking to see if I could see one of the moons.

Nice work,
frisby

Thanks, Laurent and Charles!

Laurent, this is already cropped from 1920x1080 to 940x560, no downsizing. From this first attempt, I think the sweet optical spot of the combo (as far as balance between reach and video quality is concerned) is 800 mm + 3 TCs @ 2x + 1 TC @ 1.4x, or about 9000 mm focal length. I'll try this on the next clear night, and limit the ISO to a maximum of 6400 for more manageable noise levels.

Charles, it's very tough to get both Jupiter and its moons in one exposure setting - the dynamic range is beyond the capability of the 5D2 sensor. If I expose for the moons, Jupiter will be blown, and vice versa. For stills, I "cheat" by shooting two frames at different exposures, each optimized for the planet and its moons. I then combine the two frames in post process.

NASA released this pretty awesome picture a while back of Earth, our moon, Jupiter and it's three moons all in one (very long) image. Granted... you'd have to set up on Mars to take it, but the pic is amazing.

Here is a link.
