Stu Maschwitz was one of the original founders of the Orphanage, the people who pioneered a lot of the “film looks” in digital video with the creation of Magic Bullet and other programs. Adding to his list of accomplishments, he recently wrote a book detailing how he went about creating his own action movie on the cheap. If you haven’t read his book - you should. Not only is it an inspiring tale, but it details out the steps he went through to pull of the looks he got in his film, which he shot entirely on MiniDV. After having read his book, and being inspired to see what I could pull off, I decided to first apply some of the methods in my daily production of the stock footage that I produce. After all, if he is getting great results using MiniDV, then I’m sure that I can adapt the same concepts to improve the HD stock footage that I am shooting. So the quest began.
