Ryan, really wonderful stuff. The Red landscape shots are breathtaking...looking like something ILM would produce :) I love the music choice also, it made everything move forward and kept things exciting.

I'm not a big fan of repeated shots but you edited them to great effect in this piece, particularly cutting on action and then picking up a few shots later. Favorite shots included the above mentioned red landscapes and the girl running with the flower.

I'm in awe of your knowledge and sense of lighting, you use it very well and your footage looks really professional as a result of taking the extra time to light your subjects. I know you are meticulous in how you work and it really shows here.

I have followed your progress as a cinematographer over the past few years and you have come leaps and bounds since I first became acquainted with your work.

A few things of note:
1. I would reframe the shot of the man at around 1:32, way too much head space for my liking.
2. I realize these shots are from completely different shoots but I would recommend unifying them a little bit with some color correction. I'm really talking about a handful of shots that have milky blacks, making them looked washed out. It is especially noticeable next to shots that have really rich blacks. Anyway, that's just subjective, it's ultimately your call.

Nice work, I really enjoyed your demo.

Thanks for the detailed feed back. :)

Steven,

I really appreciate the detailed feed back regarding the reel.

In regards to the CC and the blacks- I'm really not happy with how the reel compressed out. I'l still working on this, as when I graded everything in Color it all looked great. Nice deep blacks, and it felt more balanced out over all. Then I compressed it for the web, and everything got washed out. Which I am not very happy with at all. From what I've heard, other people have experienced this too with Final Cut Pro. So I still have to mess around with the compression settings- something that I am not very skilled at.

While I appreciate the comments on the editing, unfortunately I cannot take credit for it, as I had someone else edit it for me. I did however pick the music, which I really enjoy- it is by Nathalie Manser- she has some other great stuff too. Having someone else edit my reel was nice, as it freed me up to continue working, but it was a different experience letting someone else handle my reel. Glad I did it, and I'll probably do it again, as my editing skills are not the greatest.

Thanks for checking it out, for the kind works, and for the well stated critiques.

Cheers,
Ryan

Ryan,

Yes, nice choice of music. I recognize quite a few Indian instruments.

I agree with Steven on the black levels and repeat shots too. The one with the kids in the school corridor definitely needs fixing (in order to match). The two shots of the hand running through the grass (Gladiator style) were too similar. I think the one at the end was more fitting than the one at the beginning.

So is this the ’08 reel (since the earlier one said ’06)?

Ok, just saw your reply to Steven, after I posted my comment :).

Are you on a MAC or PC and did you upload a Quicktime file?

Thanks for the link- I'll be checking it out, and recompressing the reel. Hopefully that will help with the black levels- as I do hate not having true blacks.... especially when the original file has everything graded correctly.... I appreciate the help. (Especially for someone like me who does not know much about encoding / compressing.) :)

Cheers,
Ryan
