After Effects Demo

A short comp of what I learnt to do with AE. Most of this stuff i learned from Andrew Kramer's tutorials. He rocks.

This is quite commercial stuff, aimed at possible employers. I find it too flashy and MTV-like.

Next on the list is a more quiet short, done in 3DS Max. I'm looking forward to that.

No cameras used in this demo, only public domain footage from the US gov and mostly stills from sxc.hu

I agree that Andrew Kramer rocks, but about your reel:

You got some great graphics, and I especially love your lower thirds. They are very nice. I think it should be shorter. Both the music and your images are too long for my taste. Keep it short, select what you truly feel is your best work and I think it would be way better. Maybe let the music guide your graphics. Mix some ambient sounds, some sound fx trough, make it more real. e.g.: you have that footage of the burning helicopter. Mix some sound trough it from a real news item. Give it a more realistic tone to it. That sort of stuff. But thats just my opinion. BTW, the composite of the burning helicopter is not so convincing, I think you would better have used some stock footage of real fire, let it glow outside the cutouts and place some smoke in and around it. Then do some color correction and grain matching and it would fit in way better.

Your 2D to 3D mappings at the end are nice, especially that road effect, but I feel that you should do something more with it. Right now they are not telling anything and I think they are not so special. Composite some other elements in to it, like title graphics or something.

Your transitions from one graphic effect to another are really well done.

Regards

Erik

Erik,

Thank you for taking the time to write this!
I'm especially pleased since i agree with you on all points + you gave me some extra ideas i didn't think of, like the sound effects. That really is a great help.

What are lower thirds?

I'm deeply happy with your comments. As soon as i have time i hope to put a fancy version online.

Oh by the way, i started with AE in june, because i found a rare Belgian job vacancy for a compositor (sadly i'm not hired). Just to say that Kramer gave me all the tools to really become very accustomed to the AE interface IN NO TIME. (I made this piece a week after i started with AE)

I'll give you a comment on De Boer en de Nimf, which i saw yesterday, but didn't take the time to comment.

If you made this a week after you learned AE, than it is very impressive.

Lower thirds are those title boxes for interviews, news comments and title description on music videos. They are usually about 1/3th of the height of your video, and are positioned below left. So that's why they call it that way.

Hey Willem, I feel bad I haven't looked at any of your videos. But I am here now and boy, this one is surreal. I loved it! I know what you mean about it being commercial and MTV like but it's so professionally and beautifully done, I didn't mind it at all! I really loved the intro with the shadow of a child and the water in the background. I also liked the way the earth became the child's eye. I liked the way the text blended with the images and the blurry effects and all the colours worked really well, I thought. I think the whole thing is really cool :D

Ah, I am no good at commenting on things to improve, to me this looks good as it is and is persuasive enough to make me watch it more than once :D

Did you use 3DMax for the intro?

Great job! I enjoyed it immensely.

Cheers,
Lydia

Hey Lydia, thanks a million times.

I haven't used any 3D app, though i hope to show some animation renders soon.
This is all done in After Effects, which is mostly 2D, although some plugins can create a nice 3D illusion.

I'm glad you liked it.
