Sebastians
Tony, where did you find this talented Kid! This is probably the best short film I've seen all season! Congrats! Do you think he would be available for some other projects? Just let me know his agents phone number!

Tony,

I thought this short was very interesting in the way you've used special effects. Now that you've done it, I can think of a few ways you could have made it better (20-20 hind sight and all).

That mirror scene was really neat. I'm sure Sabastian couldn't have imagined the final effect and cut while you were getting him to do all this stuff!

Thanks, Shiv. I'm completely open to constructive criticism. So, please do tell how you think I can improve. I accept the fact that I am a novice and I am eager to learn. I too have already seen a couple things I could have improved on as well. I hope they are the same things you will tell me. That would let me know that I've got my mind going in the correct direction. But please... anyone who cares to comment, please do!!!

Thanks & best wishes,
Tony

TALENT!
Dusty, you're such a comedian, but I seriously don't think you can afford this kid! ha ha ha :)

Kid vs. Inner Kid
Talk about a split personality. I have never seen a kid tease himself before. Hhhhmmm.

Tony,

In the morror scene I thought Sabastian could "interact" with the double in the mirror. The same actually goes for the other scenes to it seem more real. In the last scene, because he jumped in "out of nowhere" it kind of killed. So play with the basic concept, with some form of interaction with the double.

Thanks for the good advice, Shiv. You're absolutely right. Having more interaction would be more convincing. I'll definitely keep those ideas in mind for the next time I shoot anything like this. This one was just something I threw together in an hour for my nephew who rarely gets to visit. He really got a kick out of it. Now, he can go home and show all his friends how cool he is.

I was wondering... Do you have any videos on Exposure Room that have good special effects? I'd love to see some other examples / ideas.

Tony,

I've seen a few but I suppose the best thing to do is to do a search for Effect in our search page Search for Effects

David Hodge    August 06, 2008 09:53 AM
SFX Search
I might sugggest looking through the www.creativecow.com site for any sotware you might have for effects. There are tons of free tutorials and ideas. Tons for small prices also. There are so many programs out there to get pro results and you don't have to mortgage the proverbial farm. Even if you don't have the software yet you might get some ideas you can pull off through old fashioned means. Try going to the site and looking through the After Effects tutorials. That might inspire you.
Another good source is to look up tutorials on www.youtube.com and search for the software packages for effects and compositing. Try After Effects, Apple's Motion, Apple's Shake, proMatte, ultimatte, Red Giant Psunami, Continniuum, and the like. You will find quite a bit. Hope this inspires you.
You on the right track. Go have fun and experiment. Cheers!

THANKS!
Thanks everyone. I really appreciate all the advice/tips. I've been watching the tutorials on Creative Cow. VideoMakerMagazine also has some good tutorials on YouTube. I really like the dynamics/community of exposureroom.com as well. This site has already taught me so much in just the last few months.

Thanks again & Best wishes,
Tony

Tony,

David has made some good suggestions; however, (personally) I don't care for special effects in that sense. What I liked here was that you have to shoot a specific way in order to get the "effect" in post. That to me is taxing certain skills as a videographer and editor rather than having to learn new tools and new skills (if you know what I mean). Not that one shouldn’t learn new skills, but it’s more like pushing the envelope using the skills you already have.

Tony Murnahan    August 06, 2008 11:43 AM
Shiv,
I completely agree with you on that. I mean... there is an art to digital special effects, but I'm a huge fan of trick camera angles, split screen stuff, and all those old school methods of special effects.

I loved this one~ Lots of great ideas to make a longer version of this too...
