Why have an Air Force ?

Hey,
Nice video :)
You have lots of cool footage of planes.
As a pilot I appreciate good airplane movies :)

I have a question:
Why in the world the Swiss have an Air Force?
A dozen cruise missles can destroy all the runways and they could never take off!

For that matter, why any military?
No one ever attacked the Swiss because they were neutral all the time and even now, they don't get involved in any war.
Man, that always puzzled me why spend all that money on the military when you really don't need it and could not defend that country anyway :)

Well there is a good old Swiss joke about this during WW-2.
The Germans told the Swiss that they could take over the country because they have a million men army and they only have 500,000 men army for the Swiss. The Swiss replied, well, then we just have to shoot twice.

Thanks, I'm glad you enjoy the movie.

I'm also glad you know my little country. That's a good question and I don't have any good answer to it. Army in Switzerland is a duty that every man in age from 19 to 24 have to do. Unlike other countries, swiss army is a milita. In my opinion army is not really for doing war but rather developping team spirit and camaraderie.

Why a Swiss Air Force ?
Simply because a lot of swiss pilots want to fly with F-18 and F-5 ! :D
Or because Switzerland is the center of Europe's air corridors and they must provide security. As an example during World Economic Forum in Davos, Swiss Air Force ensures the security airspace.
Runways ? They don't need runways. They've got facilities to take-off from Highways. It's very impressive seeing them landing under bridges and so.

I loved the joke ;)
