I'm very excited to tell you all that I'm making the leap to HD in a few weeks.  I'm very blessed to work at a facility that has a budget, and trusts me enough to give me the go-ahead.  I realize that many of you may work as freelancers and I have the utmost respect for the fact that you must forge ahead and make your own way, and every piece of equipment you purchase comes at a cost.  But life has brought me in the place I am now.

I will be purchasing the Sony EX1 and a new Mac to support the workflow.  I work at a University and a large portion of what I shoot involves the high performance motorsports industry, which I love.  However, the creative artist in me has been yearning to shoot and edit some more artistic pieces with a distinct style.

I live in beatiful Northwestern Ohio, which has some of the most beautiful scenery in the country.  I have a concept in mind for a short film called "Storm" using a beautiful piece of music from The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.  My goal is to tell a short story about a rain storm arriving at the farm my in-laws live at and how it effects the scenery, animals (of which there are many) and the overall mood of the day.  I have had a vision of what this would look like for a few months now, and my goal is to fulfill the vision in my head, which, as you know, is one of the most difficult things about our profession.  I very much believe when a person can take the grand vision in their head and successfully transfer it to video, they have reached a certain milestone in their expertise.  This short film will very much be a mood piece, and I look forward to posting it (eventually).

Welcome to HD.

Todd,
As a fellow Ohio-er, let me welcome you to the wild, wide world of HD. Ok, I have no idea what I'm talking about. But I like to network.

I'm over in Cleveland and I too am blessed to work somewhere that has/had the cajones to purchase a camera for me to launch our video program. I started in sales, then transitioned to writing articles and taking pictures, and as of six months ago I'm the new(only) videographer. So I'm pretty excited.

They pay for all of the equipment and I get paid to learn and shoot. It's like a double-whammy of winnings for me.

Oh, but back to motorsports. What kind of high-performance motorsports stuff are you shooting?

Hi Will, nice to see you and thanks for the comments. I work at the University of Northwestern Ohio, which has a world-renowned automotive and high performance motorsports program. When the kids get done w/the HiPo program, they can basically build a car from the ground up. Most of the stuff I shoot here has to do with dirt track racing and ARCA racing. We had a competition here last year called the Jegs engine masters challenge, which was pretty cool. The best engine builders in the country came and pulled their engines on our engine dynos. I sound like a commercial, but I love it! We also have a college of business here, but the high performance stuff is way more fun to shoot.
It's nice to meet a fellow ohio-an (or ohio-er). What kind of work do you do? That's quite a transition from sales to the video world. Good luck and keep in touch!

I work for StylinTrucks.com. I write articles and product descriptions for the website and started doing video stuff pretty regularly about six months ago.

Hi Todd,

This is a nice post. It's good to know what other members are up to and what they think about. I'm a race fan myself but I'm more into motorcycles (MotoGP) than cars. I've put a few engines on a dyno tweaking compression ratios, exhaust ports and ignition timing etc. in order to improve top end, bottom end and things of that nature, so I know this stuff is a lot of fun and very exciting.

Look forward to your mood video :)
