Longtime friend and assistant coach Phil Johnson has joined Tim Floyd to helm the UTEP men's basketball program. The former San Jose State Spartans head coach also won a national championship as an assistant to Lute Olsen at Arizona and coached with Floyd in Chicago. While at SJSU, Johnson famously got into an argument with local attorney and Miners season ticket holder Randy Ortega here in El Paso. Security had to keep the pair separated. The bad blood has long since faded and Ortega showed up for Johnson's press conference to mug for the cameras.
