All shots in this demo were shot, edited, directed and animated by myself.

Music used in this video is not property of Charles Frisby and is used for Demonstrative purposes only.

This is my demo reel as of March of 2010. You can get caught up in updating your Demo every time you finish a project, so I am calling this one solid as of today.

Until the next demo reel.

Great edit charles! I can see (and appreciate) the effort you've put into this edit.

Maybe it's just me, but I'm not too fond of vocals for a demo reel unless the audio is from the clips themselves.

I also found the color saturation a bit much @1:04 - 1:10.

Overall a good edit of your of your work.

Charles Frisby    March 19, 2010 02:12 AM

Thanks Shiv. Yeah... the saturation on that part looked ok on the computer, but once it hit online it seemed to loose it's mind.

I just like the song... so I went the words. It does make the music video clips part a bit awkward though. I will have a newer version soon... I had some animation I forgot to drop in.

Thanks,
Frisby

Nice work again :-)

Like your demo reel, and I saw you took one of my favourite shots as a starter ;-)

two little (constructive) crits:
-the shot around 23sec - one has to stop the video to see what it is, when you just watch it (and never have seen this shot it looks strange as you can't see what it's supposed to be...) - I would either make it longer (so the house behind gets in focus, or drop it)
-the second one is more a personal taste thing. Don't really like the hexagon shaped sun around 32 secs... Even though this comes from your apperture, it kind of looks fake to me - maybe track it and put an artificial sun in AE? (hmmmm.... put a fake sun to make it look real - strange idea ;-))

But both of the mentioned points are no mood killers and I really like the reel, it has really nice shots, is light and fun to watch (perfect length) :-)

For the saturation, this is the thing with online video - it will look different on every computer. On my old laptop it was on the border but still looked ok..

Continue you good work and have fun doing it ;-)

Frederik

PS: Sorry I can't show new material - I'm working very hard to finish my PHD, and the few projects I had was for customers which were very keen on privacy.
But in May my PHD will be finished, I will get married and will start two new projects, and as one will be my demo reel I will for sure post it here, but I have some big ideas so it could take a while :-)

Charles Frisby    March 19, 2010 03:40 AM

Thanks Fredrick. I stuck to shots I read that people liked as well as my thumbnails. Keep all the good stuff in the front as they say. I plan to drop the odd fence shot as I need to make room for the animation I neglected.

I appriciate the comments! Congradulations on the bride to be, and the PHD.

Frisby.

Good work bro. I don't mind the vocals on this at all, and think it's a good song choice.

Good pacing. Variation and some diversity of mediums.

It may be just a hair long, but overall nice work.

If you're ever in Wichita look me up, we'll go shoot!

demo reel

hey charles when you change speed on the 7D footage do you have on the time at 60fps or conform at 30p and then change the speed?
let me know
Charles Frisby    March 19, 2010 01:06 PM

@Rafael Gonzalez

My target was 30FPS for sports. So here is what I did.

I filmed at 60fps. Once I get it on the computer, I drop the 60fps file into Cinema Tools (Comes with final cut studio) and hit conform. I drop it to 29.98. Then I do my usually conversions for all of my files. I usually keep my 60FPS files sperate. In FCP, I change the speed to 200% which actually makes it full motion at 30fps. MAKE SURE you turn off frame blending. I made the mistake when doing the football video.

For the fast/slow/fast... I would play it at whichever speed I wanted to use. Cut at the moment in the song for frame portion, cut it, change it to fast/slow. Get to the next part. Rinse, repeat.

Hope this helps.

thanks bro
Shiv Kumar    March 19, 2010 01:35 PM

Charles,

Since on the 5D/7D 30fps is exactly 30fps and not 29.98 shouldn't your timeline as well as the "conform" step be 30fps in this situation?

Does rinsing in FCP washout the colors (as a result some members have a "washed out" look problem)? :)
Charles Frisby    March 19, 2010 03:01 PM

The frame rate is not actually 24/30/60

I just filmed 3 quick clips at all three frame rates. I dropped them into Cinema Tools and they showed me all of the info.

24= 23.98
30= 29.97
60= 59.94

I'm not sure about the washed out look. I convert to Pro Res 422 for editing. When I don't, if I use Magic Bullet Looks I get crazy looking results and lots of artifacts. That may be what people are seeing.

"Does rinsing in FCP washout the colors (as a result some members have a "washed out" look problem)? :)"

ha...haha... just got that :D
Shiv Kumar    March 19, 2010 03:12 PM

Looking at the metadata of a "raw" video file I see the fps as exactly 30fps. And I know that's the correct fps :). Besides, I remember reading the specs in the manual and it said 30fps there too.

don't know what Cinema tools but use MediaInfo its a great little tool I highly recommend and it works on both PC and MAC.

Maybe the 7D footage is different?

From Canon's 7D Press Relese
http://www.usa.canon.com/templatedata/pressrelease/20090901_eos7d.html

"The EOS 7D Digital SLR camera will record Full HD at 1920 x 1080 pixels in selectable frame rates of 24p (23.976), 25p, or 30p (29.97); 720p HD recording at 50p or 60p (59.94) and SD video at frame rates of 50p or 60p (59.94)."

After the 5D Firmware.
Firmware Version 2.0.3 incorporates five enhancements to the movie function and a fix to the manual sensor cleaning function of the EOS 5D Mark II camera.

Adds or changes the following movie frame rates.
1920×1080 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)
1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
640×480 : 30 fps (changed – actual 29.97 fps)
1920×1080 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)
1920×1080 : 24 fps (added – actual 23.976 fps)
640×480 : 25 fps (added – actual 25.0 fps)

Thanks for the mediainfo link... I wanted something like this on PC. I had been transferring to my Alienware after converting on Mac. Looks great!
Shiv Kumar    March 19, 2010 04:33 PM

Thanks for th egreat info Charles! I wasn't aware that the firmware upgrade for th e5D Mark II changed the fps. I checked one of my existing video files.
Charles Frisby    March 19, 2010 04:54 PM

This will make using the 7D and 5D together in productions much more streamlined. Now I want a 5D... but the Scarlet with the Canon Adapter is what I'm filling my piggy bank up for.

Good Job.

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Dallas, I have been a film junkie from a young age. While I was heavy into to 2D computer animation in high school (as well as 3D animation in college), it was not until I received a roll in an independent film that I realized my love for film-making.
