Band concerts are typically one camera that zooms in.... out... pans... rinse and repeat. For this concert I wanted to roll with 3 cameras with one in the back and one on each wing of the stage. As a last minute decision we went with a behind the back curtain shot. It seemed to work out pretty cool... though my attempts to move the tripod while filming didn't turn out to be as hot as I hoped.

This was also the first time I had the pleasure of getting to work with a Zoom H4n Handy. The band director used it to record the master audio used in this video and tossed the file my way. Amazing raw audio.

We ran with two XL2's and an unmanned (wide shot) XHA1 running in SD. These where three vids that stuck out for me.

Filmed for PTCI.

Good Job!

Nice work! I do a lot of HD multi-cam live shoots for rock bands and whatnot. We usually use Canon HV30s and Panasonic HVX200s. I work with a local venue and he actually does 16 track live recording and mixing. It turns out great!

Those Zooms are very handy indeed. We used one to capture dialogue in a short we recently shot. I'm definitely going to get one. It is so handy and it captures great quality audio. Two stereo mics plus two inputs and records to SD card. Can't beat it!!!

Having an HV40.... I know why you would want to use a Zoom. I've never once used the audio from my HV40... even with a shotgun attached. I wish I had the option for HD on this shoot... It just gives you a ton of options when shooting for SD... or even 720. On the wide shots I was able to get away with 100 to 120% zoom with not to much pixelation.

Thanks,
Frisby

Well, the short we just shot was on a RED ONE, but we still captured audio from a nice shotgun mic connected to the ZOOM. That little thing is pretty amazing. It just makes things a lot easier on small productions with small crews. I'll send you a link once it's finished. We're having the sound design done and it has to be mixed.

I'm saving my pennies for the Scarlet...

If I adapt well to recording audio seperate from the camera... I may end up grabbing a 16mm camera and sending film off for digital conversion. The cost of production will go up... but I love me some film.

awesome!!! i have yet to work with film, but i do love what you can do with it. Have you seen a release date on the SCARLET yet??

Good Going Charles. This is interesting for me as I recently posted a vid from 5d, final audio Handy H4n + a very old Sennheiser MKN 300. Used Singular Software "Pluraleyes"to align the new audio In FCP ( WAV files). I also ran a multicam test for 5d conformed to 25 fps with 7d same rate. Final audio, Handy H4n Pluraleyes sync. It worked well.

Encouraging to read positive comments from other Handy users.

Have A Very Happy Xmas.

Last I heard was speculation. Not quite as elusive as the Apple Tablet... but the 3D renderings have caused a lot of drooling at the idea of 2k/4k resolution in the palm of my hand. My 7D will have to appease me for now.

@Ron

This was an odd sync because there were three different cameras and all three were gathering different audio at once from different distances. And then there's the zoom. I manually synced these on a song by song basis since I knew the bit rates would not match up and would slowly fall out of sync.

I plan to grab one of my own In the next few weeks and practice syncing up with somthing a little more controlable. It will be a great asset as I use my 7D more and more.

Great Charles, the Zoom is my favorite live music tool!

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Dallas, I have been a film junkie from a young age. While I was heavy into to 2D computer animation in high school (as well as 3D animation in college), it was not until I received a roll in an independent film that I realized my love for film-making.
