About the Video
25 Hours in Manhattan was shot in chronological order. I opened with a time lapse shot of sunrise at 6:30am on Saturday and ended with a time lapse shot from Columbus Circle, ending the shoot at 7:30pm.

Camera Settings and Accessories
The opening shot was shot at 600iso with full open Shutter and aperture. It was the only shot in the video that I used my good ol' EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS. It was a little too grainy for my taste (and a little too blown out) so I vowed to shoot at 300iso for the rest of the trip... which I did except for the Skyline shots. After a nap, we walked down 8th and hit a few shops before finding one that had the EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS.

PLUG: NY Camera & Electronics at 494 on 8th will match any price... and upsell you like a champ. They had plenty of lenses though and have no problem with letting you slap their lenses on your Camera Body. Service may vary depending on who is at the counter.

The lens typically comes stock with the 7D, but I really jumped the gun and wanted the 7D sooner than it was widely available and I settled for body only. It cost me an extra $200 in the end, but at least I feel like I earned the right to use the lens... in some odd way. The lens works great, but in the subway, if I did any zooming at all, I would lose a lot of light... I mean A LOT. I tried to keep the lens full open when shooting in low light. It was hard to keep the ISO at 300... but "Look Ma, No Grain!"

The skyline shots from the Empire (that I used) were set to full Automatic.

For the most part I used my 561BHDV Video Monopod with Fluid Head for shots on the street and the subway. On the Empire State Building, I had to go handheld since they do not allow any pods. It was really windy and cold and the building was swaying... so LOTS of stabilizing in post. All of Time Square shots and the Time Lapse footage were shot from my 503HDV,351MVB2K Aluminum Video Tripod Kit. I shot a few shots at 60FPS and did slo-mo (The only reason to ever shoot with 60FPS in my opinion). I did this in 30fps, but plan to shoot everything else (Besides TV ad's) in 24p.

My wife and I had an amazing shoot and I am finally getting the hang of this cam. I'm looking forward to future 7D projects!

Also: Props to Adrien Veczan, the photographer who posed for the image at 1:26. He does some great work I discovered. Check out his work out at: Adrien Veczan Photography

mic input

What type of mic input does the 7D have? Or does it have one?

3.5mm... Pretty sure its only mono. I never shoot for audio... Just turned out that way this time. A lot of people use the Rode shotgun (batt powered.... No phantom) or the Zoom Hn4 for seperate and use the 7Ds for sync refrence. The 7D auto balances audio and gives you no control other than on and off. That's why most opt for the Zoom. That... and up to 4 channes of audio!

I have to purchase my own Zoom. I'll be picking up a 7D here this month. Have you used any of the Zeiss ZE lenses for the Canon EOS line?

Here they are on B&H

Awesome video mate. Love the way you put it together simple and full of colors.

Very nice work. Love the color density. And the music. And the editing. And the fact of having no noise. Congrats.

@Tony Murnahan

I was going to pick up a Zeiss kit when I was still planning on getting a Letus... but then the DSLR video movement started. So far... I only own Canon glass.

Coming from a video environment, the hardest part about the 7D is the photography side (ISO/Shutter/Aperture) and focusing. The stock Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS that comes with it has a very VERY smooth focus (see the opening shot after the title).

I suggest lots of tripod work early and lots of test shoots. The video does not always match what the viewfinder shows you.... so test out shots and make notes on the settings. Having a laptop with you (and card reader) really helped me decide the settings for this shoot.

Also... when editing... follow this tutorial.

If you try to edit the files off of the camera, you will get a lot of noise that you could easily do without.

Hope all of this helps. I also hope this is not info overload!

THANKS!

I've read some good reviews for the EOS series Zeiss lenses. I think I'll try a 50mm 1.4 & a 85mm as well (when I get the money).

Thanks for the info. Not an overload. I appreciate any help to get me a head start with the camera. I'll definitely take your advice. Thanks again!!!!

Born in Los Angeles and raised in Dallas, I have been a film junkie from a young age. While I was heavy into to 2D computer animation in high school (as well as 3D animation in college), it was not until I received a roll in an independent film that I realized my love for film-making.
