Joe,

This is fantastic! I love the way you've edited this piece. Everything just seems to flow and the "message" gets out really well.

The images are really nice too. I'm surprised at how well the GH1 does with all those mixed lights.

Once again, great job.

Joe,

A Ripper! This little camera (& driver) really delivers.

The feature that appeals to me is that, the camera is very discrete not unlike 35mm Rangefinder ... Not an attention getter. Have ordered GH1 kit ... Looking forward to happy days and renewed mobility. Cheers.

Shiv - Thanks for the comments. I really appreciate it. A lot of work went into this one. I'm going to upload an SD version and will encourage them to use XR to embed in their website.

Ron - Thank you. Great camera, well worth experimenting with. Main reason I used it was the lowlight possibilities. I shot with a 1.4 lens in the darker interiors and it was a life-saver.

Some shots were lost to mud - fast camera movement and fast action, but there were only a few shots that got tossed.

love it

Joe,
Really amazing picture quality. Boy in HD mode on my 24" iMac the picture was amazing. Wow, shot on a GH1, just goes to show that any camera in the right hands looks great. Their is something about Panasonic, I've always liked the filmic quality out of them.

Light was wonderful, I especially like the interviews with the stage setup behind them (sound and lighting was very good). The other interviews didn't grab me as much (I'm assuming you had to go to them vs. them coming to you). What I especially like is that too many videos on here are just music videos and they don't tell a message like this. My background is all videos that tell a message like this. Having this fabulous subject matter doesn't hurt either.

Well done. I really enjoyed it.

@Steve - Thanks for the comments. I know your background, so coming from you I take them as a big compliment. Good guess on the interviews. On stage was my first choice, the dressing room was the fallback if we got kicked off stage. Which we did...!

By the way Joe, if your source audio is better than 128kbps, I'd encourage you to encode another version using 320kbps (instead of 128kbps) and updating this video (rather than "Upload New Asset"). The audio will really "pop" and this would be a fun video to watch again.

Shiv - thanks for the comment! Nice to hear it in audio too. It's really great to receive feedback like that. And I'm really pleased you picked up on all the details. A lot of work went into this. Thanks again.

How did you record audio?

Very nicely done, Joe. I'm interested to know how you recorded audio, which sounds very good. I'm about to take the plunge with a GH1 and the Zoom H4n, and will need all the advice I can get from accomplished practitioners like yourself!
Joe Shaw    November 17, 2009 01:04 PM

Andrew - all the audio was recorded on the ZoomH4N, which works very well. Some of the atmos was taken from the built in mic, which works well enough - but shouldn't be relied on.

Well, Well not a Canon 5D or 7D in sight !

This has up the anti for making the GH1 HD SLR of 2009 for me. I have seen so many 5D/7D footage good and bad that's it's nice to see a non conformist like yourself going your own way with the Lumix.
Were you able to use one of Steve's loupes on the GH1. Shot at 720 50p good choice. I am surprised that Mr Bloom did not talk you into getting a 5D but I am also glad he didn't.
The GH1 has played second fiddle to the Canon's for long enough it's the only HD SLR with a swivel viewfinder which must have been a bonus for those low angle shots.
The only bummer is having to use an external sound recorder and syncing them later but you did a smashing job...well done.
Joe Shaw    November 23, 2009 04:13 AM

Philip - thanks for the comments. For the record, I actually own a 7D - but I didn't use it for this job as I hadn't had it long enough. That said, I would seriously consider using the GH1 for this job again. It worked perfectly. For interviews, just leave it running - no time limit and the rotating screen was extremely useful.

I didn't use a loupe for much - I have a sock-loupe which is only so-so - but for shooting the show I used it no problem and it helped me nail focus.

I've shot a lot of paying gigs with the GH1 now and it works every time. I got some breakup of the codec on some of the faster moving stuff - but not enough to worry about.

1080p?

This was great work. Did you record in 1080p and then go down or do everything in 720 60p and then conform?
