China, ABHC Style
A record of my experiences in China as an American Born Half Chinese, or ABHC, while teaching conversational English to junior high students. (Click on Titles to continue reading posts.)
Hello family and friends,
I am switching my blog portion to a dedicated blog service, as ExposureRoom's is a bit clunky for it. My videos and photos will still be stored here so that you can download them. I'll embed some photos in my new blog, but you'll
Just uploaded a new photo or two. Lately it has been quite foggy in the morning, giving way to a brief sunshine, and then continued cloudiness. My week hasn't been the greatest, with a sore throat each morning followed by a croaky voice in the afternoon. I'm sure my students appreciate
It has been a while since I've written here, but it's been a good and bad week. First for the bad: I've had a sore throat and cold on and off since Friday to the point that I couldn't really teach and just showed a movie to my classes. I only left the apartment today so I could

Just uploaded two pictures for you all. One of the entrance I take to school, and one capturing a volleyball game. I rather like how I caught one student in mid-air hitting the ball.
Well, so much for my daily photo. I just spent the weekend resting from all my trips in the past six weeks and didn't bother taking pictures. Today I would've, but the weather became nasty and cloudy, so the otherwise pleasant-looking campus now looks gloomy. My title derives from

Seems like I've gotten into a routine and don't think there's anything particularly special to report about. So, I will try to take a picture every day to show you what my daily life is like and the who where and what I encounter, starting on Tuesday. I'll be traveling to Hong Kong and won't
Got some pictures uploaded from my trip to Beijing. This is one of the few times Beijing skies are actually blue, so soak it in. My video should be up this weekend, as I have time to rest and won't be traveling for a few weeks. I'll save my Beijing adventures until then as well, as

Just letting anyone reading know that I've uploaded a video of my dorm and apartment. Not much to see, but I did try out the voiceover feature on the video of my new apartment I'm still working on the National Holiday video, planning what to do voiceovers for and explaining what's going on.
I've added some pictures to my assets from my trip to give an idea of where I've been for the first six days of October. You can download my pictures by clicking the button with an arrow pointing down (download button) right below each picture. I'll have a video up sometime in the next two
Wednesday wasn't too bad, even though
most of the songs sung at the KTV were Chinese pop I wasn't familiar
with. I met some of Mike's friends and former students, and played
some lousy pool games. Mike was kind enough to invite me to dinner
for Mid-Autumn Festival, after I just called him to see
In case you have failed to notice, I've uploaded my first video, and my second video will be uploaded tonight (Sunday afternoon in the US). You can see whatever I upload by hovering over the menu button above my profile picture and selecting whatever asset you want to see. You'll have

After
a few false starts with my lesson on greetings and tone, I think I
have a better outline for involving the students. It certainly helps
to reward them with pictures of family and homes. Some students

After
a week or two of teaching, I've learned a lot about myself and there
have been quite a few things that have occurred. While singling out
students for breaking rules and having them dance and sing is fun
To my viewers out there, even though you are as responsive as my students,
I've just finished teaching 8 classes, and boy is it a full time job. It is a very long learning process for me just teaching the same lesson. The students here aren't shy with each

I've finally made it to Hengyang after a 13 hour train ride from Beijing to Changsha, followed by a 3 hour minivan ride to Hengyang. Right now I'm in temporary housing, which consists of one room and one bathroom, until my actual apartment is done with renovations. I am fine with the
I've noticed that I have had several unique visitors here. If you're a friend, please leave a comment and suggestions for videos so I can know who has been here and what things you would like to see. I leave in less than 48 hours, so get ready for some actual content within the next week
There are significantly fewer restrictions on uploading video through ExposureRoom in China, so I am using this site over others for sharing my media and thoughts with my friends and family.
To you who are reading this, I hope to upload videos of interesting
