The Poetry Machine is a sweet comedy that ponders over the ambiguity of 'art' and 'design' in the human existence, that of the heart and the brain. The story plays with the Jesse's choice between mechanics & creativity, his struggle between 'making a living' and 'following his heart' and tries to establish the process of becoming whole, fusing the two energies. The Poetry Machine itself is (just) a device to achieve that. And it well represents us, a machine with feelings. Nothing is really fully mechanical or artistic.
