Since the D90 has a large sensor (compared to Lorelei's tiny sensor) you can get the type of DOF seen here. This is not possible with a small sensor (i'd have to invest in a DOF adaptor (costing more than the camera itself)). But that's life.
Roxana Ghita    February 08, 2010 01:22 PM

oh, i didn't know that. i thought it was thanks to the lenses, due to the fact that they are the same i use for photos - so i can transform exactly what i see as a picture in a moving image, quite amazing that.
i love my little D90 (it has very lovely colours as well) despite all its severe limitations (for ex., i couldn't have shot your walking man, since it lacks autofocus and if the object moves even a bit it comes out of focus immediately). and it gets hot very quickly (unless i am shooting outside in the snow) and the shuts down by itself in the middle of the shot. but let's not concentrate on the disadvantages now and enjoy the DOF :-)
Prospero Exiled    February 08, 2010 02:40 PM

i think you have a proper focus ring on the D90. Which means that even if you don't have auto-focus in video mode, you can still pull focus.

"Pull focus" is a movie term (the focus puller) where a person (usually other than the camera operator) moves the focus ring to different positions depending on the action.

here's a little information on my dof problem.

i see. but how much a camera which has DOF-ability would cost? i don't even dare to think... how right you were, with that Cocteau quote...

yet there are ways to compensate for any disadvantage, this only means we have to be more and more creative - limitations may be a blessing in the right hands. and besides, you have your magic.
Roxana Ghita    February 08, 2010 03:35 PM

ps. i have to research about that pull-focus, i remember reading about it but not in connection with the D90.
Prospero Exiled    February 08, 2010 04:05 PM

Actually, you are good to go regarding DOF with your camera. And (if i wasn't clear) your focus ring in on whatever lens your are using and you need a second person to "pull focus."

As for me - check out
http://www.jag35.com/

they make a dof adapter for my canon (only $99).

but, there's other interesting stuff there for you.

am i overloading you with stuff??? when will you have time to sleep

Prospero Exiled    February 08, 2010 04:07 PM

did i mention that all time is irretrievable?
Prospero Exiled    February 08, 2010 05:01 PM

Did you use a tripod on the first shot? You never said what happened to your hazy footage... any progress?

Asking questions is one of my secrets.
Roxana Ghita    February 08, 2010 05:33 PM

i would have thought that not answering questions is one of your secrets, magician :-)

so you found a solution to get the same DOF, i am so happy about it! and so cheap, incredible.

don't worry about my sleep.

no, you hadn't mention that about time, but that is another secret we share - what else is the Bridge? the fact that we get along so well is also related to this, i think, shall i call it understanding, sensitivity?

that is a good question, about the tripod. because it is so shaky? does it disturb you? that's a mystery actually, because i had shot much that day and using a tripod, so i assume this too was shot that way but why did it end up like this, i don't know. i must have done something, i always do :-) but i thought it would be ok here, since the window was moving as well and the storm shaking everything outside.

about the hazy shot: as it should be part of a longer and more complicated video, i thought i should first learn and practice the basics of Premiere with a small clip like the Fugitive Openings before attacking something as big as that. so i don't know yet. another problem with Premiere is that it freezes very often, every 10 minutes or so. and then one loses everything. i have to force myself not to forget saving after each change i make, but i am hopeless. it might be because i don't have much space left on the hard disk (around 18 GB only), i don't know. Ram memory should be enough. i have to clean my disks one of these days.

d'autres questions, mon invisible sorcier?

Prospero Exiled    February 08, 2010 06:23 PM

yes, i did notice... since i'm having the same problem.

I've had to throw out most of what i've shot recently and it's driving me crazy.

And remember, Lorelei (frail and delicate flower) is much lighter than your camera and lens. Still, the weather was bad (raining) when you took your shot... there was a breeze - your window screen was moving - i guess it was enough to cause the instability.

I haven't solved this problem yet (but i must say that i have a real cheap tripod and that's not helpful).

About your Premiere crashing... could it be your graphics card?

[do you get the feeling there's more than one thing to worry about here?]

Do you use your tripod much when taking stills?
Roxana Ghita    February 09, 2010 07:06 AM

[yes, but if i indulge in that feeling i will very soon start speaking of architecture myself - do you know i wanted to be an architect at some point in my life? but that is irrelevant since i have wanted to be so many things - everything! besides, you said it clearly: "i won't allow you to give up" so that is not an option for me any longer]

it's not possible that the storm outside (snow storm, that was no rain) may have caused the instability, i would have noticed - and the other shots are fine. however i have now a dim recollection that i sometimes placed the tripod on my bed to search for some angles and even used it as a monopod, holding it - this could be the result of that. i have similar shots which are steady, but i wanted this one because of the angle of the window and the way the snow falls. yet if you think the shaking is too bad, then i could try and replace the first part - what do you think?

i practically cannot shoot without a tripod, because it gets too shaky (i can't believe Lorelei is lighter?!) - it would have helped if i could have looked through the viewfinder while shooting but the clever Nikon guys didn't allow this option - it's impossible to shoot while holding the camera in front of me and looking at the live screen, the arms tremble too much.

we've had strong winds here these past days, and another snow storm. i have thought of you.
Prospero Exiled    February 09, 2010 09:34 AM

how could i

I don't think you should replace it. It has its own charm. It's just that i'm hyper-sensitive to camera shake at the moment (and it's something we both need to be aware of).

I'm thinking that your D90, with a modest zoom lens, weighs something like what Napoleon weighs ( heavy, that is). Lorelei is a pixie (elflike or fairy-like creature - nothing to do with pixels) and is as light as a feather.

I'm waiting for the winds to subside. In the meantime, i've been working on a visual answer to your self-portrait with crescent moon (no, i didn't forget) ... (how could i?)

with any luck, it will be ready soon.
it's not perfect, but you (ever so gracious, did i mention charm?) will understand.

and for the record, i don't mind at all when you send me back to different places on the bridge - it is like a second home to me now.
Roxana Ghita    February 09, 2010 04:54 PM

i am a bit speechless now, dear one - indeed, how could you make me such a gift - i don't know - amazed, happy -
