Filmed at the end of the 2 day F-Stop Academy Cinematography workshop in Dublin when we were in wind down mode. Shot on a pre-production Canon 7d.

I took the Canon 7d, Zacuto Tactical rig, Z-Finder V2 and one lone lens, a Canon 35mm f1.4, which becomes more like a 50mm lens on the 7d. So a bit like what I did with Sofia's People (but I didn't have the Zacuto rig for that).

I shot 1/50th of a second as I was shooting 24p and to match the 50hz frequency of the artificial all around me in Temple Bar.

I also shot some stuff 720p 50p with shutter at 1/100th to get the slow motion shots of the juggler which were conformed to 23.98p in Cinema tools to create the beautiful slow motion.

Sound on the last bit was just the internal mono cam mic as I didn't want a big mic on top of the camera.

Big thanks To Darragh and Emma for organizing the workshop. To all the people attended and especially the people who came to the intensive 1 day Cinematography practical workshop on Sunday. Jala (from Germany), Cathal (from N. Ireland) and Jean-Jacques (from France) stayed on another night and joined me for the night shooting. We had a great time. You may also spot my partner in crime Den Lennie a couple of times here.

Music is appropriately by the great THIN LIZZY and is of course Whisky In The Jar.

No grading was done.

That is a really great video Phil. I love these shots of people and with everyone having fun and singing an dancing. And as usual you get all the pretty girls to pose and smile for you. It's just not fair!

But I can't attribute this great video to the Canon 7d or the 35mm f/1.4.

Thanks for posting this Philip, and for doing it FAST. Especially glad you posted it ungraded so people can assess the true nature of the beast. Im downloading it now for some look see on the timeline.

WOW!

What a really really beautifully shot film. All the shots are so nicely composed. You can almost breathe the atmosphere. I wish I could have been there, also being part of your great workshop. Hopefully next time!

Happy Days!

Philip,

Good times, good video. .... A real blast!

I find it interesting to note your setting for what ever format & effect. Thanks for sharing this info.

I think my choice of basic new glass for 7D would be : EF- S10-22 mm F3.5/4.5, 24 mm 1.4, 35 mm 1.4 & perhaps F1.8 85 mm. Cheers

Love the cameo, cowboy! And the tagged princess, too!

It seems like you have light in spades with the low-light performance.

It also struck me how much can be done with available lighting, particularly the alley looks like Victorian London, apart from the shopping plaza in the background.

Phil,

> it's not the camera or the lens

Right, exactly! That's what I'm saying.

Brilliant! I don't know if it's just me, but my eyes are drawn straight to the bokeh in a lot of the shots, not the people. Is that normal?

Philip, you're going to make a lot of money for Canon with this video. I seriously think I'll have to get one myself along with the Zacuto kit. This would have to be the first DSLR that's really grabbed my attention.

Just one thing though, I would assume those ebay adapters that let you use Nikon lenses on Canon cameras will work fine on the 7D?
Andrey Maklakov    September 10, 2009 03:56 PM

Thank you, Philip. Now, I can't sleep. I want Canon 7d. What are you doing with me? :-)

Impressive & Inspiring (quick question)

Makes me wonder what I could do with one of these. I've been holding out for the RED Scarlet because it is essentially a DSLR that can be modified to a cinema camera that shoots 3K. My question is... "Should I hold out for the Scarlet OR opt for one of these DSLRs that shoot 1080 and add a Zacuto DSLR cinema kit?"
