Fourth in the unintentional "series", after Sofia, Dublin and San Francisco.

This time it's Venice Beach in LA that is the focus.

Very different from the other 3 in that all the sound and music was recorded on location using just the simple Rode Video Mic plugged straight into the 7D.

Big thanks to Sara Collaton for inspiring and for her cameo as she adds much needed glamour to the piece.

Great interviews. New York was a trip. Everyone was so "bird" happy. Great honesty in this shoot. Great audio as well!

and this is where I live.....
Shit Philip, WHAT real people you have captured, I had to watch it a couple of times to look at the film quality. Great!

Shiv Kumar    November 03, 2009 01:00 PM
Phil,

I love these people shorts you do. This one takes the cake because you have them talking and we get to hear what they are saying. I like how you've edited this with the "live" music John Nester playing right through the video.

I'm also amazed at how well you pull focus cause "New York" was shifting back and forth all the time and you had him in sharp focus almost always!.

Charles Frisby    November 03, 2009 03:10 PM
Shiv, my exact thoughts on the focus pulls. He either must practice a lot, or he is using unicorn's blood on the focus ring. Either way, I'm impressed.

A Winner!

Wow, great character study.

Finally got see this. This would be great on a "best of Philip bloom" Dvd with your commentary on a separate track. I think people would like to hear the artist on these tracks... Your thoughs, what you did, what you would do differently, what inspired you do this....

I love it as well. Great audio from that little video mic. This video makes me miss Cali. Great piece. I always look forward to your work...

Very Nice! I'm getting this Canon 7D in a few days and looking forward to it, but is it me or does this video have a tremendous amount of rolling shutter? I've never really noticed it before, or perhaps it's a result of being handheld?

Steve M.

Philip Bloom    November 07, 2009 04:57 PM
I haven't notice rolling shutter? is this on the flash version or have you downloaded it...am very careful about rolling shutter. if u can point out times would appreciate it

Steve MacDonald    November 07, 2009 06:40 PM
Hey Philip, on the flash version. I couldn't download this at vimeo
as it came up with "no longer can be downloaded for the day"
prompt. I'll definitely have a closer look at the mp4 download.
As for the flash file, I see this at the first during "Newyork" sound
bites.

Philip Bloom    November 07, 2009 06:42 PM
Download it here Steve. Vimeo has limited downloads unless you are a plus member. Let me know if you see it on mp4 version.

Shiv Kumar    November 07, 2009 06:59 PM
Steve,

when you say, "at the first Newyork sound bites", do you mean at 00:00:18 (18 seconds into the video)? If so then I don't see it, I think its the camera movement along with a wide lens and closeup thing.

FYI: The "Rolling Shutter" phenomenon has nothing to do with Flash and everything to do with the camera. So if you see it in the Flash version then it's there in the mp4 version as well. I mean "mp4" is not some magic bullet and besides, what you are seeing (on-line) *is* an mp4 version.

Keep in mind also that the native format of the camera is also mp4. But none of this has anything to do with the video codec.

Philip Bloom    November 07, 2009 07:03 PM
often Shiv rolling shutter artefacts are confused with stuttering streaming playback or some stuff.

Native format of camera is .mov not that it makes much difference.

Steve MacDonald    November 07, 2009 07:09 PM
Thanks mate! I'll have a look here in a bit. Are you seeing this on
the flash version as I describe? Anyone else seeing this?

Steve MacDonald    November 07, 2009 07:14 PM
Shiv & Philip, just so you know I did let this fully buffer
before viewing, so I don't think it's a streaming issue.
Right now, I'm away from the home, but I'll
definitely tell you the exact frames I'm seeing
this at upon my return.

Shiv Kumar    November 07, 2009 07:16 PM
Phil,

I see how one can confuse stutter with rolling shutter.

Well, I'm still trying to "see" if you get what I mean. I remember seeing one of your videos in which you demonstrated the rolling shutter effect and it was really very clear. In this one I get a "giddy" kind of sensation at the point Steve is refering to but I don't see a rolling shutter.

The video codec the Canon 5D MK II and 7D use is H.264 which normally has a file extension of mp4 but they've used .mov. I assume when people say "mp4" they really mean a video encoded using the H.264 video codec :).

Tony Murnahan    November 07, 2009 07:17 PM
I do notice some sort of jitter or whatnot in that first part when I view it in HD, but not in MD.

Shiv Kumar    November 07, 2009 07:23 PM
Steve,

Along with pre-buffering, can you take a look at the Medium version instead of the HD version? And also switch to full screen.

The reason I'm asking you to do this is to try and eliminate the stutter effect (our Medium versions are encoded at a very high bit rate - *much* higher than other websites's HD version. Our HD versions require a *lot* of processing power and really good Internet bandwidth.)

Switching to full screen mode will use hardware acceleration and so the GPU will take over the video processing parts while the CPU can do the rest.

Shiv Kumar    November 07, 2009 07:27 PM
Tony, you need a better computer :)

Tony Murnahan    November 07, 2009 07:36 PM
Shiv, I'm using a new Mac Pro 8-core with Mac OS X Snow Leopard. It's not so much a jitter as much as maybe just the frame rate and the movement. It kind of makes me dizzy or something. especially on my 22" monitor.

Philip Bloom    November 07, 2009 07:38 PM
Don't listen to Shiv Tony. He uses PCs!!

Tony Murnahan    November 07, 2009 07:41 PM
Boxing!
I love 1:04 - 1:09

Shiv Kumar    November 07, 2009 07:44 PM
Phil,
Have you seen the specs of his "computer"? That's like, (what's the word I'm looking for here) ancient! And weren't you supposed to keep my secret a secret?

Tony, I'll give you a link to a really good work station. It's not expensive either and you'd be able to watch XR HD videos without a problem guaranteed!

Yea, dizzy is how I feel when I see that part.

Tony Murnahan    November 07, 2009 07:57 PM
No Problema
I don't have a problem viewing XR HD videos. They load fast and look fine. I just miscommunicated. It was just the dizzy feeling I got when I blew it up on my monitor. It was much more intense when I enlarged it.

Are you referring to the Psystar computers?

AND - Shiv, your secret is safe with me!

Steve MacDonald    November 07, 2009 08:01 PM
In Tony's defense, that is pretty much what I'm seeing, and this
is a brand new MBP. Sorry to start a fire storm, but if it's jitter,
or rolling shutter, it's something and it's apparent. I still need to download
the mp4 file, if it isn't there, it's a mute point, as far as the 7D is concerned
and that's paramount for myself personally.

Tony Murnahan    November 07, 2009 08:06 PM
Kick Me in the A$$
"1 dollar , 1 KICK, Your foot, my A$$...

that keeps resonating in my head.

Shiv, Send me the link too regarding the good PC....:)

Thomas

Shiv Kumar    November 07, 2009 08:11 PM
Tony,

No I'm talking about the Nehalem-EX 64 cores, that's the "PC" I have. 64 cores with 128GB of RAM with four 4 GPU cards, each with 1GB of RAM. I use my 52" HD TV as my second monitor when I want to watch XR HD videos and I don't see any issues.

Of course, with my PC I could be watching 3 HD videos simutaneously and running HD 5 encodes that takes about 5 minutes for a 5 minute video at the same time and not even know it.

You want?

Shiv Kumar    November 07, 2009 08:13 PM
Tony, yea me too. Actually, that's pretty ingenious if you ask me. some people come up with great ways to make money.

Tony Murnahan    November 07, 2009 08:25 PM
MONSTER PC
THAT'S FANTASTIC! Is it a windows OS? Can you run any operating system on it? I'm really stoked about my Mac Pro. I love how my computer/operating system is good so I don't have to be.

Hey Guys, we should start having movie night at Shiv's!!!

Charles Frisby    November 07, 2009 10:06 PM
Damn Shiv... are we really gonna whip them out and compare?

I just have several capable machines rather than one huge (hide the kids when it Boots) machines. But then again... if Apple ever supports Blu-Ray, I plan to get a monster Mac Pro very similar to Shiv's.

Shiv Kumar    November 08, 2009 02:40 AM
@Tony,
Yes, Window 7 64bit. Any 64bit OS, but I don't know about MAC OS, and drivers etc. Windows 7 is multi-touch (like the iPhone) and I have a 30" touch screen as my main monitor.

Yea, movie nights at my place will be fun!

@Charles, it's not much bigger than any workstation. The computer that is. The OS is installed on a 6 disk RAID 0 (6 WD raptors) and the machine boots in about 15 seconds. I have an external RAID enclosure comprised of 16 disks in a RAID 6. The enclosure is larger than my workstation though.

Everything just flies on this machine. When I open Photoshop (for the first time) It's ready to use in less than a second. I could go on.....

Didn't mean to hijeck this thread, Phil.

Steve MacDonald    November 08, 2009 10:33 AM
Alright had a look at the original download and it is clean, no rolling shutter. What's bizarre is I first saw this piece on a friends new MBP 13.5" screen and believe me there is a rolling shutter effect on the playback.
I'll have to have another look at this on that particular MBP. Now on my personal MBP 17" with an HP 22" external monitor, I don't see this shutter I did on my friends MAC. Conclusion, you gotta have a good external monitor, at least
that's my take. Cheers!
