Short knocked together of some test shots done for the JVC GY-HM 700 review. JVC asked me to put this together for them...by the way this is totally ungraded!

Music is by Claude Debussy, The Girl With The Flaxen Hair

Check out the original video review where these shots were used here: http://philipbloom.co.uk/2009/03/24/video-review-of-new-jvc-gy-hm-700-hd-camcorder/

Claudia and I enjoyed that. Nice and relaxing. Also enjoyed the review - very nicely presented and structured.

You got Claudia trained up on FCP yet??
Armin Ruede    March 26, 2009 07:26 PM

We're getting there... It'll be the next step after learning to sleep by herself. :-)

Don't bother teaching her Quantel, don't think it will around much longer! Hope you guys are well and super happy!!!
Armin Ruede    March 26, 2009 07:34 PM

Thanks Phil, very under slept (as per the rules), but happy, yes. Okay, will cross Quantel off her rapidly expanding curriculum...

Rendering time for footage

Thanks for the footage here Philip, looks great. Only thing is, I am still running Final Cut Pro 5 and the footage took about 25 minutes to render before I could do anything with it. I know that FCP6 has improved handling of HD material so do you have the same rendering wait with the JVC footage(assuming you are running FCP6)? Dropping footage straight into FCP is all very well but would be a nightmare with my current setup for anything of any length! I'm really keen on this camera so am hoping there is an easy solution to this. Thanks Philip.

You are a shooter

Brings tears to my eyes Phil. The music and imagery go together so well. There are very few shooters I would ever work with on my on filmwork, but I hope we get the oportunity to work together some day on a film project. I'm sure, I'll make it happen. Thanks for this.

Hard to believe there is no grading

Wonderful color. Did you tweak the image controls within the menu system or is this factory settings? Thanks.
Philip Bloom    March 27, 2009 02:48 PM

Yes a little bit of fiddling. Crushes blacks and saturation up a notch or two. Detail turned off.

lovely comment Steve. thanks ever so much. Means a lot to me

Thank You!

Philip,
Thank you for your gear reviews. It gives us guerrilla film makers a peek as to what's out there. I like this cam for it's sd recording capabilities and also the interchangeable lens option. However, I noticed like a purple aberration that stands out at 00:15 and 00:17. Is it the Fujinon lens that's causing this or the actual ccd's. Or did you color correct the footage with that in mind? Oh, and thanks for your thoughts on Fiona's Fix. Starr and I were very happy that you enjoyed it. Thanks Phil and keep inspiring us with great footage.
Peace out!

Chromatic Aberration

Greetings Mark,

If I may jump in and add my two cents to your question regarding the chromatic aberration (CA), I have been shooting with the original GY-HD100 for two and half years using the stock Fujinon lens. I immediately noticed the CA while on my first shoot with the camera. After some research I determined the fault was in the lens. Fujinon makes great affordable lenses but, to get that affordability you lose a bit in the precision quality.

I have been meaning to replace it with a comparable Canon lens at the cost of $8,000 to $9,000 but, have not done so. What I have done is learned to shoot with the handicap. The CA usually only happens when shooting into a bright source of light or background. Avoid shots lit this way and you avoid CA. There are CA correction filters out there that can be added in post but, I haven't used them.

I have seen footage from the JVC GY-HD100 shot with high quality lens and the footage is brilliant. This camera and its decedents have great potential but, as always its all in the glass.

Greetings Philip,
I was googling for reviews of this new JVC GY-HM700 and I found your website. Congratz man: truly a great tool for all of us trying to better our videomaker skills. Good narrative style and beautifully shot footage. Bravo.
I have been working for the past 2 years with a JVC GY 250. About a year ago I bought the firestore DR-HD 100 which makes instant mov files and made my workflow much faster (although a huge bulk to carry around).
The problem I find with the 250 is the noise. I thought it might have been the compression by the firestore, but even when digitizing (such an obsolete term this is, in the solid-state era) I get the same fuzzy pixels in the darker areas of the frame.
I was excited at the HM 700, hoping JVC would have fixed the problem but - although much improved - I still noticed noise, even with the 1080p, 35 mbts footage.
I am not an expert in 'painting' the settings (I do mostly ENG/News work) but I was wondering if you had fiddled enough to recommend tricks to reduce/minimize this hated fuzz.
PS. I like the Anton Bauer compatibility of the JVC and I'm looking to upgrade to the 700, but I'm considering also the Sony EX3. What would you recommend?
Thank you so much for your advice. I will tune in to follow your reviews.
Ciao
