Beautifully done Phil. The camera looks like a really nice piece and from the way you went about the review it’s very apparent that you’re sold on the EX3. As someone whose doesn’t know much about the EX1 I was half expect you to focus on some buttons that you ignored, but all in all I now know the difference between the EX1 and EX3.
I thought the DOF was too shallow when showing the camera because I (as a viewer having never seen this camera) wanted to get a better look at the various parts of the camera. But you got the message across loud and clear and that’s important.
Sony announced the price yet?

they were just beauty shots at the start. There are clear shots of it throughout the review and stills on my website Shiv

Beauty shots :). Actually I was referring to the close-up shots throughout the video. But that's not a big deal.
The LCD looks like it comes with a kind of "hood" to allow for the view finder to clip on. So my questions are:
1. Is that the intent (to provide a hood) and does it work we well as the hood you use on your EX1?
2. Is the hood removable? Or essentially does the LCD tuck away in a way that it's safe from being damaged/ripped off? I'm pretty sure, but it just looks like a big hood and wasn't sure how or where the LCD would get tucked away.

There is no Shallow DOF in the footage in the film, thats weird!
Yes it does work as a hood but not as good as a proper hoodman and no it does not come off or tuck away, you should really leave viewfinder on and store it like a proper camera

Very good video. I'm glad I was able to see the difference between the EX1 and EX3 in such a timely and high quality manner.
Since the EX3 is going to be out soon, in your opinion, who do you think this is aimed toward? For instance, I've been looking at the EX1 for quite some time now and feel that it would cover my needs very well. I shoot mainly documentary style videos, but I also shoot sports and occasionally short narratives. I also want to get into shooting wildlife.
Do you think the EX3 would be over kill for those types of videos? Would you say this camera is more suitable for someone who makes feature length videos?
How about the skill level needed to use this camera as opposed to the EX1. I'm not as good as you with shoot, but I do learn fast.

Hi Rob
Using the EX3 compared to the EX1 is more or less the same. Get the EX3, if you want to do wildlife then you could buy a second hand SD 1/2" 20 x with extender and it would work great with the ex3

Awesome. Thanks Philip. Now if only I could find $12,000 thousand dollars and more for a lens. Hahaha.
Thanks again and keep up the great work.

EX#/Letus/Handheld configuration.
HI Phillip, Just want to know I have found I have found your videos very informative and inspiring. I plan on getting rid of my hvx200 and purchasing a EX3, with Letus Extreme with Zeiss ZF lenses, basic zacuto/riser rig for Letus. I already have chroziel mate box and follow focus. I am sort of a minimalist when it comes to setting up my cameras.
My question is how is the ergonomics of the ex3 with the letus and lens, matte box, follow focus attached? My gut feeling without having my hands on any of this stuff it would be very front heavy. I would prefer to keep the camera fitting like it was designed, using the semi shoulder as designed, and not add anouther set of rods with a pad on it.
I would ideally like to be able to pull the rig off the tripod and go straight to hand held without too much messing around. Maybe not possible. I am curious to how your hand held rig with letus is set up and how you like it.
Thanks gain

SONY EX3 v JVC GY-HM700
Hi Phil... I have just retired from 34 years in the broadcasting industry, mostly as a news photographer for a large network in Canada. I started out lugging a betacam and finishing with a Panasonic DVC Pro. A casualty along the way was my shoulders... one that required surgery and another that still needs surgery. Now that I am on my own, I am preparing to purchase a camera. I had pretty much convinced myself that the SONY EX3 was the way to go (especially after seeing your review) until a salesman friend asked me to test out the JVC GY-HM700... I'm expecting to get my hands on it soon. I've tried out the Sony EX3 as a friend has that camera.
You've reviewed the JVC GY-HM700 as well. I've watched the reviews on the Sony and the JVC several times and I'm not sure whether or not I'm going to have to flip a coin to decide on the camera of choice.
Let me ask you. If you had to pick between the Sony EX3 or the JVC GY-HM700 which camera would you pick? I realize that this is an objective question but I value your opinion greatly.

Ned,
Two quite different cameras. I much prefer the operation of the JVC in the way it is laid out and the shape, but the ex3 has way superior features, picture and low light...you need to decide which is more important. maybe hang on and see if an ex5 is announced soon? A direct competitor to the hpx300 and JVC 700...

PROBLEMS WITH RE-SETTING PASSWORD IN YOUR WEBSITE
HI Philip
I have been waiting for a password to be able to be register in your website
www.philipbloom.com.uk, I have not receive a response.
I had a question on how to create a timelapse with light streaks from cars. I enjoy the pieces that you have produced, they are inspiring.
I used a EX-3 1920X1080 HQ 24fps, and I crancked it to 1fps, I also changes the shutter to the longest that the EX-3 allows me. It was a night shot with cars, however I couldn't reproduced the light streaks.
Is that something that I need to do in post??
Thanks for the inspiraction.
