Phil,

That was beautiful! I loved that way you titled this video with the words in perspective along the wall. I did a double take on that one.

Now that title had me going for a bit, seeing that the video was 4:24. With all those opening shots holding the suspense for almost 2 minutes! Just couldn’t figure out what this video was about but had to keep watching to find out.

Then, finally I see what it’s about (brought back memories too) and the title suddenly made sense. Love the shot shooting the reflection. For a moment I thought you were underwater (or were you?). Do you know how high that cliff was (from the water)? Looked like 15 meters or so.

Some critiques:
You have a series of divers throwing in their caps or whatever. I thought the cuts were a bit jarring (since the motion didn’t complete. I think a cross fade might look better here. The same goes for the shoots starting at 3:07. I think here the cross fades could be done in a way that one diver overlaps into the previous dive and so on. Might add more interest I think.

Very enjoyable though.

Very nice again.

Some most original shots : reflection in the water, small Sony camera, ..

Also the way you portray people (i recently viewed Picadilly Furs again) is wonderful. How do you do that? Do you ask them if they mind being filmed? Do you have a cloaking device that makes you invisible so they act naturally?

Wonderful photography, although, particularly for sports, i wished they had used two cameras for this short, which is probably out of their budget? It would have added more continuity to the jumps.

jump cuts to me are my preference over dissolves. Especially here.

This was an "arty" short done for them. Their sports coverage had two PDW 700s and two other EX1s. One on a jib, seen in a few shots. Also an FX1 underwater.

I was hired to work on the documentary to get angles and shots the sports guys wouldn't be getting. Same reason I was hired to do air show in a way. To capture something different...

Did you shoot those mountains at the start with a special filter or did you color correct them?

Also, your portraits remain a mystery : do you talk to those people about how you want them in your frame, do they know you're filming? It's such a bizarre combination of pose and a totally natural look.
I would be curious to know more about that.

I'll answer your portraits mystery. You've got to meet Phil and you'll have your answer. Just can't say, "No", to the guy!

But you're right about his "people" stuff. I've always enjoyed his videos more when there are people in there and there is some form of interaction between him and them. And like you I always wondered....well until I met him!

I just asked them if they could pose for me, Bit tricky directed so many, but as official broadcasters I was able to do what I wanted.

i have so much wonderful footage and beautiful interviews, can't wait until they start the edit proper. Great that they actually wanted me to do an edit like this and put it up as this is how they found out about me.

It's the simple stuff.

For me, it's the simple stuff that really brings Mr. Bloom's films home. The shot of the cat, the little planter and plant, the view down this beauful little back alley - all wonderful shots.

And the water was so beautiful and clear. Some of the shots look like we're just looking down at a perfect still image and you inserted some footage of a splash right in the middle - wonderful.

This is beautifully composed from start to finish. It is pure "eye candy" that has been put to very interesting music. You have such a talent to see that certain musical passages require shots that are edited in a certain way.

Nothing is out of place here, it all flows as one continuous story. This is what others dream of achieving with their videos.

Okay, Phil, nice work but where is the footage where you took a shot at diving? Hhmmm?



I'm curious as to what you perceive to be added using the Ultimate over the Extreme. There is definately a higher price with the ultimate. You can set many things with it, but if you only use it with one camera then what is the good of being able to change so many settings? And for over three times the price. Do you really notice a difference in the image or ease of use of the more expensive Letus?

Philip Bloom. Or you can just call him "Shock and Awesome!" or better yet how about just a "Bloom'n Genius"

Any of them will work. Just call him and he will give you perfection. Truly, Philip. You capture God's magic as if you were his personal cinematographer.

You set the benchmark really high.

Wow dude, they're starting to call you 'commander'. I'd be getting scared. Clearly it would be wrong to heap on any more praise... ;-) Of course I enjoyed this hugely. And I love Morricone's music! - which you cut to beautifully. Well done.

Loved it. The rolling mix sequence of the divers from the same viewpoint is a 'tingler' if you know what I mean. Really sensitive to music mood changes, and full of interest. I enjoyed the storytelling details - like the shot of the frogmen, and the stuff the divers threw into the water from the diveboard. This all felt assured throughout... and very 'human', I never did anything but smile as I watched!

One point... there's a lot of artifacts following the ultra slo-mo divers at the end. But I'm sure you knew that.

These films (like the Duxford one), where you're shooting with other cameras, seem to work really well. I guess because there's always someone else covering what seem like the anchor, or essential shots (crane etc), you can relax and go for the stuff you like. Then you cut it, and the essential shots aren't needed after all!

What a joy to watch. I found my self getting hypotized watching it and then it was over. I loved it. Bar keeps getting higher.

I was noodling a new project today that we can do together, we'll discuss at NAB.
