Piedmont Vineyard - Fall over Wine

Virginia has hundreds of wineries and Vineyards and during the fall one of the things my wife and a friend of ours like to do is visit wineries. I don’t drink but I go along for the ride. This one time I’d taken my Canon HV20 (this is a consumer level HD video camera) with me along with my Canon 40D.
As is the case most times there was no intent of publishing a video of this event/trip but simply to practice since you can never have enough of that. So while my wife was tasting the wine I was moving around inside their bar shooting hand held. I wish now that I’d brought my Steadicam Merlin with me.

I like this piece. I thought that the wine glasses all lined up was a wonderful shot, but did you use a Position Preset for the last bit of focus? It "jumped" to focus really quickly once the wine bottle was placed on the table and was a little jarring. A little too quick for the rest of the video. But great piece. And lovely colors!

I was using the Letus Extreme for that shot so no position preset. Just pulling focus manually. :)

I have just watched this after watching the short with the wine being poured. This is obviously the full version!

I like this as well! yet again the music is appropriate and lovely rich colors. You are very good at keeping the camera steady with your handheld shots. This is very noticeable where you walk towards and pan up the shelves with the glasses at 00.30. Do you use any type of steadycam?

Hey Thanks Carl!

The trick to hand held videography is to use the wide end of the lens. No matter how easy it is to zoom in, don't. The hand held portion you see here was done using an HV20. What that means is because its a small camera it shakes more!. I didn't have my XHA1 with me, hack I didn't know I was going to do anything like this when I left home :).

I do own a Steadicam Merlin and I've used it a bit (see the equipment list of my videos and you'll know which ones have footage using it). But you still need to be on the wide end of the lens. It's really the tilting that bothers most people in hand held videos. The up down is not noticeable unless there are points of reference in the video.

Beautiful job on this one Shiv, not bad for just tagging along. You're right though, it might have been just a little better with the Merlin. Love the colors and the Letus.
