The area on which a tripod mounts is raised a bit from the rest of the body of the bottom of the camera. As a result, the only support the camera really gets from a tripod is a small surface area of about 2.5 square inces. If this area were flush with the rest of the bottom of the camera, there would be a whole lot more support and this support would go a long way towards camera stability while pushing buttons etc. while shooting.

Hi Will,

This photo was in connection with a thread on dvinfo where people just refused to accept that the mount on the XHA1 was flawed. I believe that for a camera this size the mount should have been the full base of the camera as it is on most other cameras including smaller DSLRs.

I totally hear you on this point. But also, I've got to tell you, the actual mounting plate design helped a lot.

I initially had a cheap Matthews M25 tripod and head. The mounting plate that mounted to the camera was about 5" long. That's a lot of mounting plate hanging there, not connected to anything. And a lot of leverage, adding movement and potential wobble.

The new mounting plate from my Manfrotto HDV501 head is much smaller and really mounts strongly to the camera - much less movement and wobble. Maybe I should write an article with pictures...
