This is my first attempt at a time lapse. I used my Canon 40D with the Canon TC-80N3 Timer Remote Control (Intervalometer). The Canon 40D had a Canon EF-S 17-55 zoom lens mounted on it, set to 17mm. The time lapse was comprised of 600 images in all. I set the timer to take 1 still every 10 seconds, which works out to 1 hour of time lapsed that resulted in 20 seconds of video at 30 fps. I imported all images into After Effects as footage and rendered the resulting footage as uncompressed .avi to get a very large (dimensions wise as well as file size) video that was imported into Adobe PPro CS3. The extra large dimensions of the video gave me the ability to pan the time lapse in post. I used the Canon 5D Mark II to take the other shots you see in this video, while the 40D was busy with the time lapse. The 5D for the most part had the 70-300 f/4-5.6 zoom lens mounted on it expect for the opening shot, for which I used the EF 28mm f/1.8. The 5D footage was uncompressed using PPro CS3 and the uncompressed footage was imported into the time line. You can see a blog post on how to do that here http://exposureroom.com/members/skumar.aspx/blogs/post/575/ The moon happened to be up too so I shot it while the 40D was busy capturing the ssetting sun. The music is by Trio Los Paraguayos and is called Malagueña. As a kid my dad would listen to this music so it holds some sentimental value.

Nice one. The Canon seems to shoot images pretty close to reality.
Paul Frederick    October 29, 2009 08:22 AM

Looks real nice Shiv. Great colors and the music fits perfectly! I just got a 7D and the footage is so amazing from it. These DSLRs are game changers!

Nice one Shiv!

Yeah, great idea having a second camera to use whilst shooting the timelapse. I know how boring those can be!

10 second intervals seem to work well for clouds by the look of it. Normally I would shoot them at 5 second intervals, simply to get more footage for the time it takes.

Just great! Love the color work. I'm really digging the influx of time-lapse footage I'm seeing on XR!

Hey Guys,

Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on this video. It's been a while since I produced something worthy of being uploaded to XR and so it's nice to see others think so too.

@Willem,
I'm pretty impressed with not just the 5D but also the 40D. I guess the resolution of the images (stills) is so much higher when doing a time lapse that it's pretty hard to miss (besides the composition).

@Glenn,
I think 10 seconds is good. I'll try 5 seconds the next time. FYI - towards the end the exposures were 5 second exposures with the camera in full auto (except for ISO). So 5 second intervals might interfere? I actually wanted to keep going as the images were still bright enough, but they looked way too bright in the LCD for that time of evening and I thought I wasn't getting what I was seeing.

And yes, the second camera was a life saver since, for one I got extra footage with which to make a video! Second, kept me from getting bored. The next time I'm going to invite friends and have a party or something while the camera snaps away.

@Charles,
No color correction was done in post. What I did do was adjust the exposure (for the videos shot using the 5D) so as to get those rich colors.

@Paul,
I'm glad you think the music fits perfectly. What I noticed while editing is that everything was growing on me as I edited and because the music was bringing back memories I wasn't quite sure what others would think. Is this the first time you're hearing this music?
Glenn Thomas    October 29, 2009 09:17 AM

Shiv, I don't think a 5 second exposure would make any difference. If anything it maybe just delay the next photo by a fraction of a second.

I'll give you a tip on something I do. If you shoot a timelapse in one location and then decide you want to shoot a timelapse in another location, keep the camera running whilst moving from one location to another. Then you'll have an interesting looking transition from one shot to the next. I did this at Lydia's friend's wedding in Thailand. My camera was set up on a little Gorillapod shooting a 5 second interval timelapse and I would just pick it up while it was running, move it to another table and so on. It looked great! Of course it works best with long exposure night time footage where you end up with a blur.
Shiv Kumar    October 29, 2009 09:28 AM

I'll try the 5 second interval. As you said, worst case is the next exposure is delayed a bit. Thanks for the tip. That sounds interesting and maybe I'll do just that in my next timelapse.

In another time lapse I did (not posted yet) after I was done with the time lapse itself (using the 5D this time) I started shooting video from the exact same camera angle. I did a slow pan, so after the time lapse it goes into a pan continuing right on from the time lapse. I haven't seen that being done but I think it look neat.
Glenn Thomas    October 29, 2009 10:08 AM

That could work well too!
Willem Van den Broeck    October 29, 2009 10:09 AM

I'm interested to see the pan. Also did you do a digital pan in AE? With timelapses it can look pretty cool, when you don't show the ground. I have an example of this here http://exposureroom.com/members/Soulofsound.aspx/assets/6910cf90bc0d4aba8d7312c2c7fe21e7/ Password is "elements" The pan (or dolly rather) is at 1:30, and it looks as if i'm shooting from a heli. I got the idea from someone here at XR but i don't remember who.
Shiv Kumar    October 29, 2009 11:48 AM

Willem,

I'll upload the other time lapse at a later time. The whole thing is just 10-15 seconds so I need other footage or more time lapses.

In AE, all I did was essentially convert the still images into a video. PPro CS3 does not accept images larger than 4096x4096 (it does accept videos of any size though) and the images out of the 5D are 5616x3744. Besides, importing images into PPro would mean I'd have to sequence them manually, while in AE it does that for you and you can generate an uncompressed video as per the dimensions of the images.

Since the video thus produced is way larger than HD (1920x1080) dimensions, I was able to pan (or as you rightly said, dolly) the time lapse in PPro. which is what I did even in this video (the time lapse part).

Comments on your video will follow.

Nice Shiv, I thought you would be dancing around 1:30 :) Very cool time lapse and great choice in music! Thomas
Shiv Kumar    October 30, 2009 12:00 PM

Robert,

Funny you say that you were expecting to see me dancing. Last night I was thinking about additional footage I'll need to enhance this video and one of the scenes (in my head) was of someone preferably a female dancing (or simply having a fun time) against the setting sun.
Thomas Roberts    October 30, 2009 12:06 PM

I think it should be you dancing!!! HA

Shiv Kumar    October 30, 2009 12:13 PM

Gosh, I'm trying to make this video more "attractive" no shoo people away!
theo rossi    October 30, 2009 01:06 PM

The music...

Wow, dude... that music brought back memory for me as well. I must have heard that one many decades ago when I was 'young' (not by that group)... and am old as dirt :)
Shiv Kumar    October 30, 2009 05:18 PM

Theo,

Yea, I think the original was done in 1947 (WAY before I was born) and since then there have been many artists who have done the same song in many different ways. Check out this link that goes to Amazon and you can play those versions to see which one it is:
Version of Malagueña on Amazon

I'm attaching a voice comment next that is really another version by José Feliciano

Oh yeah!

It was in the early 1950's when the first time I heard this song.

Thanks for the Jose Feliciano's version.
Really enjoyed it :)
