Early this spring on a cold and windy Sunday, my wife and I decided to go walk on the beach. When we got there, the sand was blowing in such a way that I have never seen. I jumped back in my truck and headed back to the house to get my video camera. I hope you enjoy watching this.

Fascinating sand movement.

Here are some thoughts about your video:

First, I will tell you my approach to something like this...it's neither wrong nor right, just different. I'm very visual and when I see something, it always presents some kind of music concept to me. The sand movement suggested something hypnotic and eery that would have really enhanced the rhythm of the wind and married sound and image better.

1. I felt your choice of music was really random with no real regard for the accompanying image.
2. Consider a variety of focal lengths when shooting something like this. Don't be afraid to get at the macro level to see what's happening at a granular level.
3. Keep your cuts much shorter. Keep your audience wanting more rather than less. As it is, for the limited number of shots you had, 4 minutes is really pushing it if you expect people to retain interest.

I don't mean to be harsh and you maybe satisfied with what you put together but I think these kind of images open up many opportunities to be much more creative.

Still, I'm glad you had the will to go get your camera and create a great memory of this unique phenomenon.

Steven, let me say that I'm honored that you would comment on my video. I've been following and viewing your work online for months. When I began my search for a video camera, I found your Pine Lake web site. By watching your beautiful videos, I made the decision to buy the Canon XH A1.

I actually found Exposure Room this past week because I had been reading the DV forum and saw where you had posted a film.

I'm an amateur at this but long to refine and build my skills. I got into video as a way to help market my real estate business. I bought a MacBookPro, a video camera and away I went. Started with iMovie and recently upgraded to Final Cut Express. I run a site called The Surf which concentrates on my local area. This is where I post these videos and also embed videos from others. Many of my viewers are happy just to see shots of the beach.

I'm still shooting in Auto on this camera. I welcome and appreciate your comments. I still have a lot of footage I shot that day and I hope to go back and do more as I learn to edit.

I can't tell you how many times I've called my wife in to show her your videos on the laptop. We love how you shoot nature. Please continue to advise and critique. I think it's great that you offer help and advice.
