Canon EOS 7D Test shot, I went across the street from my house and you'll find the 175 glorious acres that make up Yorba Regional Park. This accommodating place, formerly a cattle ranch, is now a perfect spot for a family picnic.

Nature trails for hiking abound, along with separate equestrian trails and a paved bike path, which is much easier for little bicyclists to navigate than dirt trails. The terrain is made up of rolling foothills, with native coastal plants and wildlife.
The lakes here are stocked and fishing is permitted with a license.

This was a perfect place to a quick test of the Canon EOS 7D, I used a Canon 15-85mm zoom lens, handheld with no color grading,

Need advice on Canon D7 vs Panasonic TM300 and 2006 Rebel, for KENYA

I am shooting a Mission in western Kenya next month. For stills I might use my old 2004 Canon Rebel, but I am am shopping for a small HD camcorder. Would the D7 be as good as the TM300? I'd love to take the Canon XL H1 I use at work, for the video, but that is not possible (and I do not have $5-$10k for an HD camera. I want to stay lite, so I was thinking of either a D7 for video and stills or my old Rebel and the Panasonic HD palmcorder, with a good shotgun mic and monopod. (all this would fit in a camera backpack, in an airplanes over head bin.)

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Advice on Shooting Canon7D for Douglas

Just getting back from Puerta Vallarta, Mexico testing the camera, it worked beatifully. I used an zoom H4 for audio, a monopod and the camera with a 15-85mm zoom lens. I adjusted the color in the camera, so I did have to do any color grading on test clips. The photo are outstanding in this camera, I usally shoot with Nikkons. This is my first Canon still camera, and like I said the photos are outstanding. I posted a photo in this section under photos.

If you want any more information, let me know...I have been to Kenya and a safe and beautiful trip.

Thanks for the tips William

How does it perform, shooting video all day? I will be doing both. I would imagine those CF cards fill up very fast, shooting video. Does it eat batteries, while shooting 1080 video? The villages I might be staying in, have "sometimes" electricity. I know I'll bring chargers, plus numerous batteries and CF cards. I have the EOS 15-85. Its a great lens.

More Tips

I took along 2 - 32GB CF, and 4 - 16GB CF cards, They lasted a week or about 16 GB a day. The batteries are shit, even with the grip which uses 2 batteries last about 6 hours. I took 4 batteries, and had to charge every night. The lens that was suggested to take was the 1.8 50mm EF lens, perfect for low light and around the camp fire type shots and great DOF shots.

My tips for Douglas

Thought I'd toss my workflow in as well.

I only have 2 batteries (they are shit) and a 16gb card. I dump my video almost non-stop onto a laptop and always have one battery charging at all times. I also have a problem with deleting video on accident. I don't miss capturing... but converting to a editable format takes just as long sometimes.

When it comes down to it... my XHA1 is my camera of choice while the 7D is great for controlled and relaxed situations. If I was going for your mission and had to choose... I'd take my Canon HV40 with 2 extended batteries, a nice monopod, lots of spare tapes and a RODE shotgun mic. That set up would cost as much as the 7D with a lens... and I think that's a solid setup for trying to get into the game for about 2K. Though after the trip... you may have wished you dropped the extra cash on a 7D.

The 7D is a money sucker though... I just sit here dreaming of lenses, extra cards, tracks and so on. Such pretty video.

Great ideas

Thanks for the great ideas. Charles, you and William have some great videos on this site.

My Panasonic TM300, two 3 hour batteries and three 16GB Class 6 SDHC cards arrives on Friday. I am going with my old 6MP Rebel (and 2 zooms), six batteries and five 2GB CF cards, a monopod, Rode shotgun and a Lowe backpack. If something happens to the six year old Canon, I'll just buy the 7D, when I get home. I may spring for the CineCity WA Matte Box. Maybe not.
Charles Frisby    January 12, 2010 03:48 PM

That's pretty close to the set up I suggested! Sounds like a winning setup for the trip. I hope to see some video from Kenya when you get back!

FYI... for when you get back. There is zero buyers remorse with the 7D. It's very pro for photo camera. Once you get your hands on it... well... it's a beast.

7D Sounds GREAT

I did an East Coast trip, in 03 with the first Rebel. People stopped me on the street, "I'm going to own that camera someday." I CAN'T wait to upgrade. I have a 5D and D60, here at work. The 5D caused lust, when the 7D came out.

Having BetaSP, then HD cameras at work, I have never bothered to own my own. On freelance gigs I just rented what the client proffered. I am VERY pumped at caring this TM300 everywhere, like the still camera in the car.
