First Impressions

The first impression is everything. An attractive thumbnail that represents your videos will draw people to watch them. You’ve always had the option to upload an image to use as the thumbnail that best represents your video, but we’re going it make it even simpler.

How it works

Here’s how this feature will work.
  1. You watch your video
  2. Pause it on the frame you’d like to use as the thumbnail.
  3. Click the button that says “Make Thumbnail”
This process takes a few seconds (10-20 seconds), so wait for a few seconds while we extract that frame from your video and generate the multiple sizes of thumbnails we require (5 sizes in all) and you’re done. So, Watch your video, pause and click a button, couldn’t be any simpler!

You’ll still have the ability to upload an image of your choosing like you can do today. We think this ability is important enough to leave alone. But for those of you who don’t know how to extract a single frame from your videos in the correct aspect ratio, this new feature is just what the doctor ordered.

Note: You have to watch the HD version (or the largest version) of your videos in order to use this feature, because we’ll need an image that’s at least as large as the largest version. This also means that you'll have to wait till the largest version of your video has finished transcoding before you can do this.

Okay, this is a very cool feature. Generating thumbnails in Photoshop and then uploading is a pain. Good work team :)

Think the burning question is when?

Shiv Kumar    June 26, 2008 07:41 PM

Soon David, Soon.

Ok, it's functional from a technology stand point and we're working on the usability aspect. You know, how would you actually go about it? What feedback should the user see. Stuff like that.

Shiv Kumar    June 26, 2008 08:22 PM

This is what I'm thinking...

Mind you, the conclusion is after analyzing a few options and the aim is to keep it consistent with what's already there.

At the moment there is a "thumbnail" link. You see it in your videos page next to each video and then again in the asset display page (the singular video) under the video. Rather than add more stuff here, you're going to click this link.

When you get to the thumbnail page, you'll see what you're seeing today and under what's there, you'll see the video in its largest size but this time with a button under it that says "Make Thumbnail", with simple instructions on top of it.

This feature has been released.
Firefox and Safari users should clear their cache or "Clear Private Data" as Fire Fox calls it. Clearing the Cache in Safari is virtually impossible sadly, but doing it a few times will eventually clear it.

If you see a "Please Wait..." message after clicking on the "Make Thumbnail" button and this message does not change after about 5-10 seconds, your cache has NOT been cleared.

Normal Operation

After clicking on the "Make Thumbnail" button you should see the following messages under the button

  1. Extracting Frame. Please wait... (this message may not be seen in some cases)

  2. Generating Thumbnails. Please wait... (this message may not be seen in some cases)

  3. Almost Done...

  4. Next, the small thumbnail below the area in which these messages appear will change to indicate a successful operation

Once again due to browser caching, you will NOT see the new thumbnail in the video player. Web pages will show the new thumbnail however. If you want to see the new thumbnail, you’ll need close out your browser instance and open a new instance. Or simply trust the system when you see the small image mentioned above, change.

Wow, Now that's what I'm talking about Ray! Now your films look more enticing.

auto or manual thumbnail-deinterlacing?

For those that haven't deinterlaced their source footage, I am not sure if it is technically possible or even feasible, for the idea of the thumbnail software deinterlacing, either automatically or as a checked option might be interesting.

Shiv Kumar    December 23, 2008 10:49 AM

Dave,

We grab a frame from the video so the image is a true representation of the video (in a sense). Not sure if we want to investigate deinterlacing since that would involved multiple frames and not just the one frame you selected. I can imagine that would be way too complicated for what we're trying to achive here.

A challenging problem (to solve) for the software engineer :)

No thumbnail for video list page.

G'Day,

Back in early Dec. Ray (above) described a problem about thumbnails not being created for the home page. I am having the same problem. Is there a solution. I'm using Safari on an iMac.

Pete

Shiv Kumar    January 10, 2009 01:54 AM

Pete,

I believe it's just a matter of caching. That is your browser is caching the old image. You could either try refreshing your browser (Safari doesn't really refresh the way other browsers do. That is one can't really force a refresh with Safari) or close your browser and then open a new instance and navigate back to the page.

Different sizes

Is there a reason why you have chosen to have different sizes of images?
What I mean is if you encoded a 1024*576 and a 1280*720 and you choose to have the small thumbnail from both videos on your webpage you will end up with a much larger thumbnail for the biggest windowssize.

For my part I would have liked it much better that you had simmilar sizes of thumbnails.

Kind regards Henrik

Shiv Kumar    December 12, 2009 09:16 AM

Henrik,

The for each asset we actually produce 5 thumbnails in varying sizes. There are a a few things to note:

1. We have changed the dimensions of the thumbnails over time
2. We have changed the dimensions of the "Low" version of the video assets.

If you are comparing say two videos that are six months apart (in terms of date last uploaded to XR) thwn you will see this difference.

Henrik Helms    December 12, 2009 02:04 PM

I know about the five different sizes and that is good. But still it seems to me that the small thumbnail is not the same size if your video windows size is eg. 1920*1080 and 1024*576.

Shiv Kumar    December 12, 2009 02:14 PM

Henrik,

All thumbnails and videos are the size you see, we don't stretch or downsize things on XR. Meaning our thumbnails are the size you see. The small thumbnail obviously won't be the size of the large thumbnail since that is a different thumbnail (the large thumbnail).

Please also note, that the largest size we show in XR is 1280x720 so you will never see a thumbnail that is 1920x1080.

Maybe you should provide links to what you are talking about? That way I can use those to explain or see what you mean.

Different sizes

Here are som expamples from the website I am working on:
http://dbamedia.dk/page2/page5/page3/dba_mch.html
Alle thumbnails on this site is the small one. But it ends up with different sizes
The same thing here:
http://dbamedia.dk/page2/page5/page43/page43.html
And here is an expample of two videos which are in 4:3 - but one ends up more than twice as big...
Here the small one: http://dbamedia.dk/page2/page4/page34/page34.html
And here the big one: http://dbamedia.dk/page2/page5/page45/page45.html

What I hoped was that if you choose the small thumbnail - it would always be in the same size....

Kind regards
Henrik

Shiv Kumar    December 14, 2009 11:21 AM

Henrik,

I think you didn't read or understand my previous reply. As I said earlier, we have changed the dimensions of the Low version. It used to be 336 width and is now 480 width.

Our thumbnails always match the size of the video so the dimensions of the thumbnails have changed as well. If you look at each of your videos on XR (the Low version) you'll see it quite clearly.

The small thumbnail is used for the Low version. The Medium thumbnail for the medium version and the large thumbnail for the HD version.

I hope it makes sense now?

Sergey, Since you haven't said anything I assume you're pointing out the white thmbnail in your video? If so, feel free to use any one of the 3 options we provide for changing the thumbnail of your video.

Logan Samuelson    June 29, 2010 09:10 PM

not working!!!

It won't work! Even after closing the browser. It just always says "no image" please heelllpppp!!!!

Shiv Kumar    June 30, 2010 08:07 AM

Logan, It would be nice if there was some explanation and a url to an asset. What's not working? Which of the three options have you tried etc. Seeing that you have only one asset it was simple to figure out. I see a thumbnail that is not the "no image" thumbnail but a thumbnail you've chosen or the system chose for you. Browsers will cache images so if you saw the first image (the "no image", image) then your browser would have cached it. The only way to see the "new" image is to refresh your page and/or clear your browser cache. If you're using Safari then you'll likely have a worse problem since Safari does not adhere to the caching reccomendations by the W3C. (other browsers do). Rest assured that others don't see the older images.

Logan Samuelson    June 30, 2010 12:06 PM

Thank you

Thanks a ton. sorry for being vague, the explanation was soon on it's way. My mind is at ease now that you've told me this. The problem was, I tried all three methods but (from what I could see) none of them worked. I will try clearing the cache, but as long as others can see a thumbnail, I'm not too worried. Thanks for your help Shiv!
